Grade 1-3-- When Solomon Joseph Azar immigrates to America from Lebanon in 1909, he brings with him ambition and the willingness to work. Though not without setbacks, he starts as a peddler and then works as a store clerk until he can return to Lebanon to marry his betrothed and bring her back to the U. S. They start a family and build their business. A fire at his store ruins the building but not his plans. Ultimately, Solomon fulfills his every wish. Detailed ink and full-color watercolor illustrations help convey a sense of time and place in this idealized story of the American Dream realized. The story is satisfying, although the adult perspective may limit its appeal. --Maria B. Salvadore, District of Columbia Public Library
