The Prodigal Comes Home...

Though Caleb Beachy tried the Englisch world for some years, he is a Plain man at heart. But when he decides to return to the Amish lifestyle, he discovers there's more to embracing his faith and reconnecting with the community than merely driving a horse and buggy and giving up his Levis. Josie Yoder was just a girl when he left. All grown up now, she gives Caleb hope for the future and reminds him that while his faith may have wavered, God never left his side. But will past mistakes end up destroying their fledgling romance before it really has a chance to begin? Delight in the story of a wounded heart finding joy, health, and healing in God's infinite grace.

Any book I’ve read by Mary Ellis makes me stop and think while enjoying a wonderful storyline and feeling like I want to be friends with the characters she has created. A Plain Man surpassed the rest of her stories by drawing me in and I found I didn’t want to leave as I turned the last page.

Not only was the storyline terrific but the subtle lessons she offered on grace and forgiveness left me thinking deeply about not only my own life but how I can extend grace to others around me. I was especially moved by Elizabeth’s speech to her husband - reminding him that even though he is the Bishop, he needs to think less about what others in the community will think about him and more about the very personal needs of his first-born son.

I love how Ms. Ellis has a gift of crafting four-dimensional people on a piece of paper. There are no cookie cutter characters in her books. She is able to write in such a way that you love each and every one of them for different reasons. They are all so unique and attractive in their own way. She makes them come alive on the page to where I imagine I can reach out and physically touch them. I can’t tell you who I fell in love with more - Caleb with his soul searching, Josie for her love of life, Sarah for her kindness, Adam for his self-consciousness, or Elizabeth for her love of family and womanly wisdom. Ms. Ellis has a gift even with the characters who are harder to love, such as Eli, Rebekah, and John. She is able to show a blend of vulnerability and humanness despite the words that they spoke.

As I said before, I love all of Ms. Ellis’ work but this book touched me deeply.

Mary Ellis has done it once again! She has taken the "sweet Amish novel" to another level entirely while telling a present-day story...causing the reader to think about their own faith, relationships and expectations of themselves and others.
In "A Plain Man", Caleb Yoder returns to his Amish family after being gone for 5 years--a very lengthy rumschpringe indeed. While the main story may seem to be one about whether Caleb-the Prodigal Son-can be fully accepted back into the Amish community, it quickly becomes apparent that the biggest doubter is actually Caleb himself.
From maple sugaring, construction projects in and out of the Amish community, working for Englisch while keeping the Amish Ordnung, dating, self-forgiveness and charity to a community's lapsed members...it is all in this novel.
Mary Ellis writes in a style that is easily understood and well plotted out.
I especially like the inclusion of "Discussion Questions" in the back of the book as makes it easy for book groups to chat about the reading experience and brings up some author-inspired discussion too.

About the Book:

Bestselling author Mary Ellis offers an engaging new standalone Amish romance about a prodigal seeking to find his way home.

Though Caleb Beachy lived in the Englisch world for some years, he is a Plain man at heart. When he decides to return to the Amish lifestyle, he moves back home and goes to work for his father. Soon these two strong-willed men find themselves at odds. Caleb discovers there's more to embracing his faith and reconnecting with the community than merely driving a horse and buggy and giving up Levis.

Josie Yoder was just a girl when he left. All grown up now, she gives Caleb hope for the future. She soothes his frayed temper and is determined to remind him that while his faith may have wavered, God never left his side. Caleb is tempted to return Josie's feelings, but the choices he made while away are a heavy burden on his conscience. Will past mistakes end up destroying their fledgling romance? Or will she be able to break through the wall around his heart?

A Plain Man is more than just a sweet romance centered in Amish beliefs. It's the ever-fresh story of a wounded heart finding joy, health, and healing in God's infinite grace.

About the Author:

Mary Ellis grew up close to the Amish where she loved their peaceful agrarian lifestyle and strong sense of Christian community. She and her husband now live by the largest population of Old Order in the country where they take weekend trips to research her books. Mary enjoys reading, traveling, gardening, bicycling and swimming. Before "retiring" to write full-time, Mary taught Middle School and worked as a sales rep for Hershey Chocolate--a job with amazingly sweet fringe benefits.

A Plain Man
Mary Ellis

ISBN: 9780736949804

For five years, Caleb Beachy tried to assimilate into the Englisher world. Recently realizing his effort was doomed from the start, Caleb finally accepts that he is simply A Plain Man. Thus Caleb leaves Cleveland to move back home in Fredericksburg, Ohio where he works for his still disappointed dad Eli; who has not forgiven his son for deserting his Amish heritage and distrusts him not to leave again when he becomes bored.

When Caleb ditched his faith and family, Josie Yoder was a young teenager. Now an adult she and Caleb begin seeing each other. She keeps him calm when he becomes irate especially with his unmerciful obstinate father; and Josie reminds him that he temporarily may have turned from the Lord but the Lord never left him. As they fall in love, Caleb's remorse for deserting his people and God leave him believing he is unworthy of Josie.

A Plain Man is a delightful Amish romance with a strong second chance at life subplot. Josie is typical of the subgenre women; while freshness come from Eli with his inability to accept the return of his prodigal son, and Caleb with his guilt for what he perceives is a betrayal to God, his family and his community. Readers will enjoy Caleb's tribulations (mostly self-flagellation); as he thinks his beloved Josie deserves someone better than him.
