Book Description

“A Pledge of Honor”, follows the lives of three women from a small South Georgia town, starting on their high school graduation day in June 1942. Knowing their lives were soon to change forever, they pledge that no matter what adventures their lives contain they will stay friends, keeping no secrets about the wonderful lives they all envision.

They share their lives through letters of the successes that each has attained, however, they all exaggerate the successes and eliminate the failures, tragedies and brutality with which they live..

Georgia Coffey proclaims the glamour, the beautiful home and designer clothes that she wanted throughout her life has come true, never telling of the lengths she’ll take to stay married and in the style she has coveted from childhood.
Carrie Hendrix, the natural healer, falls in love, contemplates an abortion and pays the price of her life. Keeping this secret from not only her friends but also the ones she loves beyond reason haunts her.
And, Beverly Colson, sweet Beverly, wanting only to be a wife and mother, marries a man haunted by his own dark ghosts. After he is brutally killed, her life is changed to that of a successful business woman and a loving wife to a man with whom she builds a truly wonderful life.

Each attains their dreams from yesteryear, but their adventures are far more than they bargained for, and each breaks the pledge taken so solemnly on that dusty road in Dawkins, Georgia in 1942.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It really brought alive the way life was then. My parents were also married during World War II and had to deal with being separated. My mother often talked with me about what her life was like then. Many fathers did not see their children until they were 2 or 3 years old. Many wives depended on their families to help them through those difficult years alone. Many couples married after only knowing each other for very short periods of time. Despite difficulties, the majority of these marriages survived until "death did them part". I was glad the characters' lives were chronicled over many years - showing their struggles and joys. I also thought it was so true how people tend to not share the bad parts of their lives with others. I have written all my reading friends and recommended this book to them. It is well worth reading - I could hardly put it down!
