As an ex-pat living in Sydney I really enjoyed reading a tale set outside of the usual North American cities. The book follows the attempts of an everyday guy - who we can relate to - and his struggles to adapt.

I enjoyed the tense opening and imaginative solutions to the problem faced in an apocalyptic world. Having travellled a lot the concept of being stuck in a foreign city when apocalyse strikes was a daydream I had consider myself and I enjoyed the creative and engaging solution that were put forward in this book. Well worth a read for those with an apocalyptic bent.

Doomsday themes are not my thing. Nevertheless, the story needs some editing to be a perfect work -- reaching Singapore by ship to then drive on to France? Later on I discovered it was meant Hong Kong to France. The characters stand on their own very well and there is a sense of permanent tension towards survival. The ending was not as strong as the story, though quite poetic -- perhaps a good alternative under the circumstances.

I received this book as a gift from the author. I always liked this genre, and was fully engaged in the survival story of the everyday guy. It really does make you think "what would I do in that same situation", and you really end up feeling for the characters involved. I ended up not being able to put it down as I was reading it, and finishing it in one sitting.

Brave and caring geek, the unlikely hero/emperor is the central character.

The author teaches us to not take our routine lives for granted; indeed to discover and use other skills confidently when faced with crisis. The book left me feeling happy despite the characters stressful challenges. As an Australian expatriate living in the USA and traveling far too often the storyline resonates with me.

A good relaxing and easy read, I'm looking forward to the second volume in the series.

It was a good, fast read. I was disappointed that there isn't a book continuing the journey.
