While looking for modern clawhammer players I was led to this record. I continue to be pleasantly surprised by the care with which this essentially single-instrument album was put together. This isn't an all-out drop-thumb technical banjo record, Cox keeps the focus on melody and rhythm, letting the songs, rather than the playing hold your attention. That's not to say that the playing on this record isn't superb, without Cox's controlled and nuanced playing the album would be little more than a collection of decent tunes.

The tracks range from bright and bouncy to dark and spacy. I particularly love the two tracks recorded on an old gut-stringed fretless banjo, including the Cox original "Andrew Jackson Go Back Home".

This album is a must-have for clawhammer fans and players, as well as anyone who enjoys simple, clean melodies and well-crafted recordings.

I bought this CD from Mary several years, and I highly recommend it to all lovers of old time music. I myself play some clawhammer banjo, so I appreciate Marys talent that she has in her mastery of the instrument.

Thanks Mary!! PS: Mary also likes basset hounds..so how can you go wrong??

Since I wrote my initial review (below), I've come to appreciate this album more and more. It has really grown on me the more I listen to it, to the extent that I've been mentally replaying some of the tracks throughout the day. And I really love the sound of some of the banjos that Mary plays. Not all musicians can make an instrument sound this great. In lesser hands even a wonderful instrument can sound mediocre. So I really admire Mary's ability to make these banjos sing, each with their own unique voices.

"Many Clawhammer music lovers are attracted to this style because of its raw energy. This album reflects, however, a more restrained approach. Mary has a wonderful, polished, clawhammer technique, but a number of the tunes in this recording lack the drive that I enjoy. Also, since traditional melodies frequently only last a few measures, it's really hard to repeat a 12 second refrain 10 times or more in a 2 minute recording and not have them become boring. On a positive note, Mary plays a variety of banjos that have a broad range of timbers giving each tune a unique flavor.

So, after all that; do I like this recording? Well, yes, it is a pleasant listening experience. So I give it four stars for recommended but not highly."
