Editorial Reviews

Formed in Italy in 2001, Giancarlo Erra's Nosound create a seductive and original fusion of elements of progressive, ambient and post rock.

Regarded by critics and fans alike as one of the most interesting up and coming art rock bands in Europe, ?A Sense Of Loss? is Nosound's follow up to 2008?s ?Lightdark? and builds on its predecessor by introducing a more alternative post-rock element to Nosound?s ever evolving sound.

Giancarlo describes the album as a ?move from the classic 'rock' (or rock ambient) approach used in Lightdark to a more unique sound, with influences from more contemporary alt and post rock.?

To create this sound the band used less synths (any that were used were almost all a strict selection of vintage synth sounds) and more real instruments including a string quartet, leading to ?an even more emotional recording than Lightdark?.

Erra goes on to state, ?The overall production and sound have moved to a more 'natural' overall sound, combined with some different sounds and approaches, a little far from Lightdark, but still distinctively Nosound (probably more now than before).?

The album was written, recorded, produced, mixed and mastered at Nosound Studio (Rome) by Giancarlo Erra. Additional production was by Paolo Martellacci, Gigi Zito, Alessandro Luci, Paolo Vigliarolo. Additional recordings made at PanPot Studio (Rome) by Gigi Zito and Diapason Studio (Rome) by Simone Satta.

This 2 disc edition of the album includes a DVD containing 5.1 surround and 24bit mixes of the album, video footage, picture gallery and more.

Those familiar with today's progressive rock scene could not come away from hearing Nosound for the first time and not be stricken by how reminiscent of Porcupine Tree and No-Man the music is. And that is not a criticism, it is high praise. For despite all the superficial similarities, Italy's Nosound remains a band wedded to its own distinctive musical vision.
The industry blurb says that A Sense of Loss is Nosound's third album. Though I have been unable to obtain the first one for a reasonable price I have heard Lightdark and think that A Sense of Loss finds the band advancing rather than stagnating as often happens with all too many bands which are at a loss to match a previously strong effort. Advances here are both melodic and lyrical and the listener finds the splendid compositions to be stunning and sublime. There is not a song here I don't like, but if I was pressed to pick a favorite, Some Warmth In This Chill, Fading Silently and Winter Will Come would come out on top.
With this edition, the listener also gets a DVD containing some outstanding alternate mixes and visuals that help maintain the mood generated by the music. Additionally, there are a few other extras that don't add much to the experience, but neither do they detract. Also included is an attractive booklet containing pictures, lyrics, and album information. In other words, A Sense of Loss gives you a lavish package. Those who never hear Nosound are really missing an enriching aural experience. If you have not yet heard them and are a fan of the broad style of music made by Porcupine Tree, No-Man, and Blackfield, the time to know them is now.

I stumbled upon this cd because I got a magazine with the song "Some Warmth Into This Chill" on it. This was simply the best thing that could have happened.

Midline incorporates Pink Floyd and Radiohead ambience with soft-spoken vocals and soothing sounds. In my opinion this is one of the best CDs of 2009, and one of my favorite CDs of all time.

This is a beautiful piece of artwork. The instrumentation and vocals are just soothing and calming. This is one of those bands who can do nothing but produce great music.
