This was quite an enjoyable read. Mary Platt Parmele had an great turn of phrase and this is for the most part a quirky and entertaining history book.

It is quite opinionated and often she doesn't bother to back up her opinions with facts or analysis. However most of what she says is pretty reasonable.

The book is pretty short and it is no way comprehensive but it is very readable and quite witty and insightful in places.

The note of optimism at the end of this book published in 1907 is pretty depressing.
Sadly Russia was to endure a lot more misery both at the hands of its own rulers and from outsiders.

If you like history, especially of European history, you will find this work very informative. It gives a good overview of Russia from the earliest of times to about the turn of the 20th century. Certainly some of the Slavic names are a little difficult, but it does a good job of putting things together chronologically so you have a feeling of knowing how the country has evolved into what we know of it today. There is enough detail provided that you can do additional reasearch based on Ms. Parmele's baseline. Not especially long considering the subject. Recommend to people who want to get a basic understanding of their history.

Planning a trip to Russia later this year and wanted to get a better sense of the country's history. This book does it though it does presuppose some sense of history of the other gateway nations mentioned. Worth the time, and better than some other more cumbersome histories. Makes the 'characters' more understandable.

Written around the turn of the century, it has a lot (often too much) to say about early Tsars and, of course, nothing about the end of Tsar Nicholas and his family, let alone the history under Communism.

A perspective from 1905. It is interesting to hear a view of Russia from before the Communist and Stalinist periods. There is an indication of what hopes there were for it before this was obliterated by the machinations of some Western Secret Societies as part of their long term plan to make a kind of vassal state of the place. I.e. To usher in and dictate its develoment.
It is important to gather the views from before the two 'world wars', since they shattered alot in the mental landscape that is mainly ignored.

Pros: free, interesting.
Cons: ends unexpectedly at 1907 (or earlier)

This book was published in 1907, so Nicolas II is barely covered and you're out of luck if you want to read about the demise of the Romanovs or the revolutions. Having not looked at the publishing date, that was not clear to me until the author started to refer to "the current situation" which was obviously around 1900. I also think the author added her opinion at times that seemed odd for a history book.

Decent book. Good read, although the author seems to unnecessarily use a lot of obscure descriptive words when simpler words would suffice. I would have liked to see more writing about the soviet era, which seems to be almost completely left out. The book may have been written before that time, which could explain the omission, but I'm really not sure. Still a 4 star book in my opinion though.
