A Sleep of Years is a beautifully written story and impossible to put down. You feel like you are right there with the characters experiencing the storyline with them. I love a good tear-jerker and this doesn't disappoint.

and I did enjoy it. The subject matter is a tough one that encompasses the loss of a boyfriend, the loss of a baby, and later on, the threat of losing a teenaged son. I was more sympathetic to the main character when she was a teenager trying to deal with the unexpected, accidental death of her boyfriend.....she reacts much as I would imagine someone would. However, the miscarriage seems to be almost an "aside" in the book, having little to no effect on the character. I don't know why a pregnancy was even written into the book, unless it's to give the character a reason to have a very strong reaction when she catches her own teenager playing around with his girlfriend. Somehow, she became less likable to me when her son was facing death. Not sure why that's the case, but I found myself removing affection for her as the book went on.

Sensitive and Hopeful,
By Ellis Hooley (Lawton, OK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Sleep of years (Kindle Edition)
When you're a teenager, you live like there's no tomorrow. But when Jennifer finds she's pregnant, she can think iof little else. But when her boyfriend dies in a tragic accident and she loses the baby, Jennifer begins to think tomorrow will never come, at least not for her. Still, life has a way of coming around in ways we least expect, drawing us together and bringing us home. In A Sleep of Years, Hooley spins a wonderful tale of life and hope in the face of loss and despair, and in so doing reminds us that tomorrow really is another day.

A Great Love Story,
This review is from: A Sleep of years (Kindle Edition)
This novel hits both what it's like to love and lose someone and what it's like for someont you've known forever to become a soul mate. It's a beautiful story.

Great True Life Story,

Though you would think that true life stories have been done to death, this author brings the romance and life story to life with this book. The book flowed so well, it was hard to put down. I really enjoyed it and will read more from this author again.

Not that good,

The story felt rushed as if the author is more used to writing short stories than novels or even novellas. Hooley more or less just tells us flat out what the characters are like rather than letting us decipher the characters through good character development. Because of this, despite the seriousness of the subject matter, I couldn't emphathize with the protagonist at all. I found myself rolling my eyes even at the most "touching" parts. The writing itself was OK, maybe the author would do better with a good editor, but I was not impressed with this book.
