This review is from: A Slice Of Sicily (DVD)
The locations visited on this DVD are: * Roman Villa of Casale * The Valley of Temples * Parco delle Madonie * Cefalu * La Rocca * Castelbuono * Greek/Roman theater in Taormina * Sights and Sounds in Taormina * Mount Etna * Carriage Ride * Archaeological Park I Syracuse * Stairway of Santa Maria in Caltagirone Note that there is a heavy emphasis on ruins, which are not peculiarly interesting because Sicily being the poorest part of Italy, there has been little or no restoration of the sites visited. All you see are carved stones randomly scattered across the landscape. Note also that with the limited exception of Cefalu and the Archaeological Park in Syracuse, there are no views of sights in the major cities, especially Palermo and Messina. Those cities contain some very interesting sights, but you won't see them on this video. There also is no narrator, just music and titles that succinctly summarize what you're seeing. Given the strange selection of sights visited I seriously question whether the producers would have any intelligent comments to add to the program. Finally, while the quality of the filming might suffice for home movies, it is not up to commercial standards. Lots of jerky and bouncy scenes while the cameraman is walking. Truly amateurish and irritating. In no way does this disk justify its price, or any price for that matter. Fortunately, there is a an excellent video on the same subject at the same price: Cities of the World Sicily Italy Buy it instead. Also, consider buying Elaine Trigiani's Top 10 Sicily (Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides) or its larger cousin Sicily (Eyewitness Travel Guides). Another, more serious, guide that receives high ratings is Blue Guide Sicily, Seventh Edition |
