Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I am very pleased to be able to present this collection of stories to the public. I believe this book showcases my range as a writer. From the hilarious to the heartwrenching, I hope there is some situation in these pages that grabs your funnybone or touches your heart.

From the Back Cover

These 17 stories are divided into humorous and dramatic sections. The humor section is inhabited by characters like Old Sam Drayton, who is convinced that he is a railroad. Wayne Grazni is the new V.P. of a growing phone company who can't figure out how his office telephone works. Four-year-old Jeffy can't understand why his grandma is always swearing at him. Then there's Joel, whose job is to sit on a park bench in four-hour shifts, which should be a manageable task.

In the dramatic section, a troubled man struggles to shield his kids from the lifestyle that sent him to prison. Corporal Fitch walks a tightrope as he tries to extract his men from the grasp of an overwhelming enemy force. Mr. Humbolm is a humble merchant whose happiest Christmas experience comes at a steep price. These characters, and many more, bring you A Smile Through a Tear.

If you are like me and love to read but you are so busy it's daunting trying to find the time to read a full-length novel, A SMILE THROUGH A TEAR: STORIES by SCOTT NAGELE is the book for you. The very best comparison I have to reading one of Mr. Nagele's short stories instead of a full-length novel is, it is like eating a bite-sized Milky Way instead of the full-sized candy bar. You get all of the pleasure and none of the guilt.

Each story in this collection of short stories is masterfully written and leaves the reader with a sense of fulfillment after reading them. Mr. Nagele has given the reader variety in not only humor to drama, but writing styles, and time frames from historical to futuristic. I LOVED THEM ALL!

I highly recommend this book for anyone that enjoys reading any genre. There's something here for everyone.

I just finished reading A Smile Through a Tear: Stories this morning about 2:00 a.m. I purposely took my time, reading one or maybe two stories a night, so as to savor them and not let them run together. As much as I like Kindle and read this on Kindle, I don't think it does the book justice. I am going to purchase the Paperback version to keep and re-read time and time again. This book made me happy...then made me sad...and also made me wonder what would have happened if some of the main characters had chosen a different path.

My two favorite stories were " We'll Always Have Drivers Ed " where the adult version of the main character thinks about the possibilities, had he broke down and asked the tall blond girl out....I believe the author says to us, go ahead, take a chance...don't go through life wondering what may have been..........and

"Mr. Humbolm's Merriest Christmas "......where Mr. Humbolm has happy dreams about the kind of life he wished he had. What we learned is that there are many people who are hurting, not only at Christmas, but all during the year, and challenges us to reach out to those who may not have anyone to care about them.

I happily rate this book of short stories 5 stars from this satisfied reader.
