Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Outskirts Manuscript Evaluation Team encouraged me by saying the following: "You have an interesting and timely composition. Your organization and thesis are clear, which compliments your voice to create a tangible, poignant narrative. You use this along with solid sense of dialogue to really let the reader "in" on what's important. That creates value. Overall, your work demonstrates strong writing with a dialogue that paces and develops nicely. Your obvious fascination and respect for the word of Muriel Spark was especially notable, and you write about it in a way that will bring many readers in touch with Muriel Spark's works as well. Your book is well written and it's clear that you have put a good deal of thought and effort into the planning and presentation of your manuscript. It is very nicely formatted with a clear and concise layout. Your ending sentence - 'The unification of all the different worlds shown in Muriel Spark's fiction represents her overall view of the world, that great stage of life where we all play a part' is a great summary to your review".

From the Back Cover

Muriel Spark seems to have viewed the world as a stage even at a very early age and must have been struck by the fact that life does not always proceed with clock-like precision. The past keeps cropping up in the present, and there are often prophetic glimpses into the future. The economic difficulties experienced by several of her characters during the Great Depression of the Nineteen-Thirties strangely resemble the economic problems facing the world today. Muriel Spark's lively wit in describing those difficulties will undoubtedly entertain readers today, helping them to overcome the difficulties of the present.

Format: Paperback
Linette Bruno, an English teacher working on the French Island of Martinique, has written a fascinating work, which analyzes the themes which run through five of Spark's best novels.

The theme of "time" which is prevalent in her work, is explored by Bruno. "Concerning the theme of time (p.2) Muriel Sparks can be said to have `transfigured the commonplace.' She has undertaken to describe in her fiction those moments in time, mere spots in time, when time is transcended. The `trivial moment' is made to represent a year, a period of history, the time in a man's life and eternity itself."

"The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" is perhaps the most famous of Spark's writings. A film was made based on the story, and was highly acclaimed. Spark's own schooldays were apparently happy (p. 7). She modeled the character, Miss Brodie, on one of her own teachers, who felt that her girls should have knowledge of subjects such as Botticelli, Italian landscape, care of the complexion, as well as more orthodox subjects.

Bruno notes "The author does seem to look back on those days with a tinge of regret- perhaps for the loss of innocence, a thing which, once lost, is gone forever. The "loss of innocence" is a theme which appears in several of her novels."

It's also noted that most of the heroines in her novels are ill-at-ease in the worlds in which they live. They are represented as lonely, frustrated individuals, continually in search of new horizons, on a never-ending search of their true selves. Like most frustrated people, they are perfectionists and are forever striving to attain unreachable goals (p. 8).

Format: Paperback
Beloved by her contemporaries, Muriel Spark never got the credit she deserved. "A Spark in Time" discusses the novels of Dame Muriel Spark, as Linette Bruno combines a literary discussion of her work as she discusses both the life and the creations of Muriel. For those who want to know who this former star of the British literary scene was, "A Spark in Time" is a worthwhile choice.
