If you don't know the recordings of this diminutive tenor you are in for one of the great treats. This kind of clear, perfectly pitched open throated tenor voice is almost extinct today. Too short for an operatic career (by the standards of his day) he achieved enormous success on radio and in film, where he could be matched with leading ladies of his size. The voice will send shivers down your spine. Popular songs of the day, Neapolitan favorites and opera arias - a wealth of vocal pleasures to be had. And listen for the high D in the Postillion from Longmongeau (sp?) - it will make your hair stand on end. Schmidt was the son of a cantor and there are a few rare recordings of him in that repertoire. But WOW! His mastery of the complex melismatic runs is amazing and (like Richard Tucker and Jan Peerce) if you can do this then the operatic range is not the least bit scary. But being super popular didn't guarantee you any safey when the Nazis came to power. Schmidt managed to get to Switzerland but was interned as an alien in a horrible holding camp (read: concentration) where care was minimal and the staff didn't care. When he needed medical care, it was not given properly and so he died there at the unforgivable age of 42. He reached heaven but his star did fall. These recordings will see it rise again.
