Book Description

What if the pain of the past revealed an unknown sacrifice that changes everything?
When teacher Laura Gantt comes home to Prospect, Georgia to settle her recently-deceased mother’s household, the last thing she expects to encounter is a swirl of rumors about the father she lost to the lake twelve years ago—that he has reportedly been seen around town. Elliott Gantt’s body was never found and he was presumed dead.
Reeling from the sharp loss of a parent, Laura must now grapple with painful memories surrounding her father’s disappearance and the sense of abandonment she experienced after his death. Life-long friend and former beau Sean Halloran wants nothing more than to protect Laura from the far-fetched stories of Elliott’s resurrection and to care for her, but he has his own reasons, troubling echoes from his childhood, to put Elliott’s disappearance to rest.
Working together, Laura and Sean begin to uncover the truth, one mired in the wooded peaks and deep waters of the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding Prospect. Can they fathom how many secrets the steep hills hold? With surprising facts revealed, will Laura be able to understand the sacrificial choices made that forever changed her life? And can love and a peace with God be rekindled in her heart after so much time has passed?

From the Trade Paperback edition.

Editorial Reviews

Praise for A Stillness of Chimes

“Meg Moseley has composed a haunting, melodic tale that, like any great ballad, lingers long after the last note. Full of romance, intrigue, and whispers from the past, A Stillness of Chimes will stir readers’ hearts and awaken their own unanswered what-if’s…and bring hope that maybe some dreams don’t have to die.”
—Betsy St. Amant, author of The Rancher Next Door and Addison Blakely: Confessions of a PK

“If you’re looking for sweet tea with a twist, you’ll find it in Meg Moseley’s irresistible A Stillness of Chimes. With sacred themes of family and the beauty of second chances, this novel sweeps you south and touches your soul in ways you won’t soon forget.”
—Laura Frantz, Christy Award finalist and author of Love’s Reckoning

“A small mountain town in Georgia, with its wry humor and full complement of kudzu, is the background for this story of three closely related families. However, less than congenial relationships lurk beneath the poetic prose of this talented writer. Clue upon clue builds—to at last reveal the startling end, hinted in the story’s beginning. The finish may catch you by surprise, but its rich meaning will leave you with wonderful food for thought.”
—Ruth Trippy, author of The Soul of the Rose

“Assured writing, fully realized characters, and family secrets revealed are deftly woven to create a story as compelling as its title. When the chimes still, healing, faith, and light weave through the silence left behind. Readers will find themselves caught up in Sean and Laura’s journey to wholeness and love.”
—Lisa Wingate, national best-selling author of The Prayer Box and Wildwood Creek

“I loved A Stillness of Chimes. It’s a classic southern story with childhood friends, memories, a mystery, and a lake. Moseley tells the tale in her unique fashion and lyrical storytelling voice. I highly recommend.”
—Rachel Hauck, best-selling, award-winning author of Princess Ever After and The Wedding Dress

“There’s something magical in the sound of chimes. Something ethereal in the tinkling of notes gracing the air. Ms. Moseley has written an ethereal story of love and of loving family. Don’t miss A Stillness of Chimes, lovely in the prose, magical as it unfolds.”
—Angela Breidenba ch, author of A Healing Heart and president of the Christian Authors Network

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written! March 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
After reading Meg Moseley’s other novels, When Sparrows Fall and Gone South I anxiously awaited her next novel. Meg certainly did not disappoint! A Stillness of Chimes was beautifully written. This book captivated me from the first chapter. The book was filled with vivid detail of what it is like to live in the South right down to the descriptions of kudzu! Meg’s ability to describe the effects of living with someone that suffers from PTSD was also captivating. Growing up with a dad that also suffers from PTSD I felt like I could relate to Laura in several ways. I could relate to how she felt when her dad would go through the black moods. I felt very connected throughout my reading of this book. Meg is able to hold your attention throughout. I would find myself thinking about the characters several times throughout the day. This book contained, humor, sadness, true friendships, and of course romance! I highly recommend this book and any of Meg’s books to anyone! You will not be disappointed, I promise!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect Southern Novel March 14, 2014
“A Stillness of Chimes” is a haunting but beautiful Southern tale chock full of childhood friends, lost love, forgotten faith, and dark family secrets in a charming Georgia town where everything is not as it seems. It is a book I did not want to put down once I began reading. The plot and its characters pulled me into the pages so thoroughly that I had to find out what would happen next.

I enjoyed everything about “A Stillness of Chimes”, the interaction between characters, the mystery of a long believed dead man suddenly reported seen around town, and the dregs of a romantic relationship with a possibility of renewal. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, the author pulled another surprise out of her endless bag of tricks. Certain revelations near the end were a bit shocking and although some things did not turn out exactly how I might have hoped, the symbolism was perfect.

A wonderful blend of mystery, drama, romance, with just the right touch of faith, sacrifice, and forgiveness, “A Stillness of Chimes” is the perfect book for lovers of Southern novels.

A Stillness of Chimes by Meg Moseley is an alluring contemporary drama with elements of mystery and romance. One my favorite things about it was its subtle “Southern charm”. Growing up in a small Ozarks town myself, I appreciate the familiarity, closeness, and quirkiness of the characters that grew up in the Appalachians.

Meg skillfully maintains a thread of suspense and mystery throughout the story as the characters cope with secrets and uncover new dangers. Meg’s prose paints a beautiful backdrop for this story. A picturesque town, mountain living, bluegrass, blackberries, friendship, kudzu, and little old ladies all make A Stillness of Chimes a unique and charming story of love and sacrifice.

Meg deals with some tough issues within this story, including abuse, abandonment, and even the PTSD-like problems of a Vietnam veteran. She confronts these problems realistically and carefully, showing their effects and influence on the characters.

The characters face questions of faith and sacrifice during the course of the story. Love and honor motivate the characters as they learn valuable lessons in forgiveness and the importance of love. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone looking to read a family drama with unexpected twists and a little romance – just make sure you have plenty of time to read, because you might want to read it straight through!

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review. (Thank you, WaterBrook!) I was not required to write a positive review - the opinions I have expressed are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Stillness of Chimes April 2, 2014
With each book she writes, Meg Moseley just gets better and better. A Stillness of Chimes is her latest novel, my favorite one yet, and it is simply beautiful. The author's use of language drew me into the story right from the first haunting paragraph.

A Stillness of Chimes is full of mystery, family secrets, love, and kudzu. When Laura revisits her Southern home town to handle her mother's estate, many memories from the past emerge, and Meg Moseley brilliantly unfolds the story as the truth is uncovered. The magical setting and memorable characters made me fall in love with this story and eagerly anticipate turning the next page.

I especially like the descriptive language the author uses to immerse you in the setting. Living in the South myself, I could really envision the scenes, but even readers who've never experienced the South's charm will find themselves feeling every bite of a mosquito in the humid, thick air:
"The world was holding its breath. No wind blew, not even enough breeze to move the chimes. She couldn't see them, hidden as they were by shrubs, but she imagined the silvery cylinders hanging motionless among the drenched leaves" (p. 209).
The plot is nicely done, with twists and plenty of questions to uncover, and the characters are realistically portrayed and made me care what happens to them.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Meg Moseley writes next!

More About the Author

Although I've lived more than half my life in other states, I'm still a Californian at heart. I love vintage bungalows, twisted oaks on rolling hills, and the rocky beaches of the Central Coast. A few blocks away from my childhood home stood a Lutheran church where I came to faith, first through Sunday School teachers whose kindness drew me to the kindness of God, and then through confirmation classes. The Bible verses that had been drilled into my head came to life in my heart.

After moving away from home as a teenager, I worked at a variety of jobs, from candle-maker in a tourist town to administrative assistant at a Christian college. I married a wonderful man from Michigan, and we lived north of Detroit for seventeen years. That's where we started homeschooling our three children, an endeavor that we finished in Georgia when our youngest graduated from high school in 2009.

My husband and I live near Atlanta, close to the foothills of the Southern Appalachians. His motorcycle often carries us to the mountains of Georgia, Tennessee, or the Carolinas. Sitting on the back of the bike, I can pray, enjoy the beautiful views, and plot new stories. Fiction makes my world go 'round, whether I'm writing it or reading it.
