Top Pick!

Hitch a ride and whisk back in time with a heroine readers will relate to, feel sympathy for and then root on til the finish. James effortlessly creates vibrant characters and places them in different eras, with each setting spot on. Even the dialogue changes as the time periods do. Readers will be on the edge of their seats from chapter to chapter waiting for the next adventure to begin in this unique, romantic story.

Rating: Four 1/2 Stars Fantastic - Keeper

Time slip novels are not usually my thing but I loved this book. Sarah is fed up with her unexciting life but when she meets the intriguing John Needler everything changes. His family has been involved with helping people from the past to find their happy endings and he asks Sarah to go back in time. The book moves seamlessly from the Blitz in WWII to the suffragette movement in London to the American Wild West. I enjoyed Sarah’s gradual travel towards her own happy ending with a man who never thought he’d be fortunate enough to find the right woman to understand his unusual life.

Sarah is a divorced history teacher in her mid-thirties. Her personal and professional life lack inspiration and direction, until one evening John arrives on the doorstep offering her an incredible opportunity to travel – in time. Her role is to go back in time and save the lives of three people. Does she have the ingenuity, courage and strength required to do this, and will she find her own happy ending?

Being a huge fan of Quantum Leap I was immediately attracted by this book’s wonderful premise, and I’m pleased to say that this story has the same amount of heart and humor that made the television series so enjoyable. The explanation of time travelling via ‘needles’ and ‘stitches’ in time is handled with such a light and natural touch that we are immediately able to suspend our disbelief, as fantasy and reality are seamlessly blended.

I think the author has chosen fascinating places and periods in history for Sarah to jump back to: the Sheffield blitz, London’s suffragette movement, and the American West of the 1870s. The description of these eras feels authentic, as do the voices of the people she helps there. Sarah’s genuine concern for the people she meets, mixed with her witty thoughts about the sexism she encounters make the storytelling come alive. I enjoyed Sarah’s first three journeys so much, that I would have liked her to spend longer in each era.

The central love story is given an extra twist by the time travelling, and although I struggled a little bit with Sarah’s last jump and its aftermath, the conclusion sets things up for the possibility of a sequel, which I would snap up without hesitation.

In the interests of disclosure I’d like to say that I won this book in a competition.

Sarah Yates is having a tough time at the moment. Her husband had an affair with her best friend and got her pregnant and her job as a history teacher is getting more stressful by the day, thanks to her nightmare students. Sarah is desperate to inject some fun into her dreary life, but with her days spent marking homework and her nights spent watching TV with only a glass of wine to keep her company, she cannot help but wonder whether she's got more chance of flying to the moon than of letting her hair down and enjoying herself. After yet another horrible day at work, Sarah is looking forward to kicking off her shoes and having some quiet time, when the doorbell suddenly rings. Sarah is stunned to find the sexy and enigmatic John Needler on her doorstep - but she's shocked when she hears his shocking proposition: he wants her to travel back in time to save the lives of three people who are in danger and who desperately need her help! Realizing that people could die if she refuses to do this job, Sarah finds herself reluctantly accepting this mission. Even though being some kind of time-travelling super hero wasn't exactly the kind of thing Sarah was hoping for when she was sobbing into her wine glass and yearning for some thrills, she cannot help but be excited about this unexpected turn of events - especially as she gets to spend more time with the gorgeous and mysterious John Needler!

John would much rather spend his time growing vegetables and running his garden centre than being a Time-Needle. But having been born into a family of Time-Needles, John has to juggle looking after his thriving business with finding people to time-travel to sew back holes which have opened up in history.

A woman betrayed by her husband and her best friend tries to get on with her life but discovers she holds the keys to history in her hand when opens her door to a stranger called John.

Sarah has had a tough year since finding out that her husband has been lying and cheating on her but is just trying to get on with her life and her career as a history teacher. All is not as perfect as it seems but then she is visited by John one day and informed that she has been chosen to be a stitch and travel back in time to help save important historical figures and stop catastrophies from happening. It seems she may have found her true calling and perhaps her heart will also be healed by the mysterious John along the way.

Life is never that easy however, as John's glamorous Italian ex shows up, and Sarah's emotional state nearly gets her in trouble while on a historical mission. With extreme trust issues, she does not know what to believe and who to trust.

I found the character of Sarah quite believable and very interesting. Her dealings with her students at the school make me feel very sorry for her as well as what she put up with from her ex-husband. John, I did not bond with well, as I found him a little too perfect and understanding but it may just be the way he is supposed to come across. The topic of the stitches and the way they go back in time to save people and the future was quite an interesting subject, and I would have liked a bit more of that in the story, more visits to the past and information about the past, too.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and historical goings-on were very interesting. The way Sarah had to try and save people without really knowing who it was but managing to get it right with a few mishaps along the way was also quite amusing at times.
