Editorial Reviews

Review

“A wonderful piece of golf writing…essential for all golfers.”

(Golf World)

“The six-time Major winner and former world No.1 takes a swing at dream rounds, wrong decisions and the lure of making a comeback.” (John Naughton GQ)

“Might be as good an instruction book as any we've seen in recent years. It's certainly the most handsome...If any 'how to' book is worth the money, this is one.” (Golfing)

"I love how Nick favored control over distance. His swing always had perfect rhythm and balance. Nick Faldo defied convention in his approach to developing his game to achieve the pinnacle of golf. I admire his single mindedness and his efficient approach to the game. He did it his way." (Luke Donald)

I enjoy golfing and have been trying desperately to improve my game and lower my handicap so I purchased this book to help me improve my golf game. It made my purchase worthwhile. I had to relearn everything I needed to know from clubs to the process in playing the correct way made me improve my overall golf game. Nick provided the most efficient way to play golf. This book is priceless. After reading the book I went back over to read it again 3 times and actually learned that I had been playing it the wrong way and now after 5 game my handicap stands at 7. I'm enjoying golfing more than I have ever imagine. Thank you

OK, here is the deal.

The video links are messed up. But basically you use your I-phone or I-pad and TAG to create links which automatically go into your Youtube account. Then you can watch them from there.

I actually made a Youtube "playlist" of all of the Tag links. (Of course, you first have to download the Tag app.)

Then, combining the book and the videos - my goodness, Sir Nick must make almost 1000 points.

So my suggestion is to start with the basics (think the first 7 or 8 TAGs), and master all of this, before spending any time with the rest of the book.

On the videos he goes VERY fast, because he is trying to get as much info to you as possible. But basically the book explains these points in greater detail.

My suggestion: WATCH THE VIDEOS FIRST, then read more on each element of the game in the book.

Nick seems to REALLY care about his audience. I am sure he makes an extremely small fraction of his overall income from books like this.

Only one negative: it seems to me, at least, that he is secretly pushing the Trackman device, i.e., he is probably getting a kick back from them somehow. I hate to say this, because I just love Nick Faldo.

So just remember you don't need to purchase Trackman, to get a huge amount out of this book and the videos, which retail for only about $20.

Love the book. I am just a little disappointed that the videos were not enabled. That would have been a nice feature.

His coach, David Leadbetter must be the source of some of these ideas. Would like to know which ones. Leadbetter uses JJ Rivet for 3D motion analysis using APAS. I would like to see APAS on Android and iOS - mobile with 3D vision systems. Could be the basis for the next Faldo book so Faldo could coach me from the device.

What we don't know even after reading Nick’s great book is what the correct golf swing feels like ... especially when we lose it. And we all lose it. And have the right answer customized based on what my body can do.

Since Nick digs in to the details of the golf swing and simplifies all the details … it would be fun to have a virtual Nick sitting in my iPhone coaching me all the time (range and on the course). I could finally learn how dial in the right swing that is right for me based on my body's limitation and then practice it (as opposed to throwing more and more tips into my noggin - new ones surely have to oppose other older ones). Then I could focus on working on how to optimize our body so we create a greater margin for error and more distance and control. Focus on the right ways and direction to strength and flexibility hitting 70 next month and extra distance turns back the age meter.

Faldo goes into both worlds - feel and analysis and does a nice job of integrating the two. Good intro book.

One thing I got right off the bat was seeing Nick's left shoulder moves forward more than down so he gets it back to his right knee. When I worked on this at the range yesterday .... all of a sudden I was hitting super shots - like 30 more yards for my 7 iron exactly on the intended line.

So from this first impression his images are as useful as his words. Now I want to get into this position with no muscles giving me feedback and telling me I can’t get there. Plus how to do this in total balance.

This book is published with Microsoft tags throughout the book. Using a tag reader it is possible to retrieve video clips from the internet providing smooth action instruction on exactly what the text is attempting to describe. However, my experience with this feature is mixed. Yes, the videos are nice, but I find myself watching a video and still wondering what the key points were within the swing to which I should direct my focus.

This brings us to the book itself. It contains many drills throughout the book that are intended to direct attention to particular parts of the swing. I am looking forward to warmer weather when I can go to the practice range and attempt to follow them with vigor. I must say, however, that I was somewhat disappointed in the section on driving. Mr. Faldo immediately jumps on the technology bandwagon and seems to become overly excited about electronic launch monitors and how great they can be for helping to diagnose a golf swing. Frankly, I don't have or want a launch monitor. I want to learn what a great shot feels like by observing the results of my swing and repeating what he is describing as keys to great play. After all, I can't carry a launch monitor around on the course with me, but I can imagine the kind of swing I want, and concentrate on key points.

Finally, useful tips are sprinkled throughout the entire book. Some of them come pre-highlighted in yellow, but these are not always what I would consider essential to my game. I plan to read the book at least two more times, each time with a different colored highlighter, and attempt to compile my own set of Faldo tips for the range and course.

All in all, I would guess this book would be a welcome gift to any golfer of any skill level.
