Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Elizabeth Stevens is one bite away from happiness.

Today is Elizabeth Stevens's birthday, and not only is it the one-year anniversary of her husband leaving her, it's also the day her bakery is required to make a cake--for her ex's next wedding. If there's a bitter taste in her mouth, no one can blame her.

But today, Liz is about to receive a gift. Her Grandma Verda isn't just wacky; she's a little witchy. An ancient gypsy magic has been passed through her family bloodline for generations, and it's Liz's turn to be empowered. Henceforth, everything she bakes will have a dash of delight and a pinch of wishes-can-come-true. From her hunky policeman neighbor, to her gorgeous personal trainer, to her bum of an ex-husband, everyone Liz knows is going to taste her power. Revenge is sweet...and it's only the first dish to be served.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting! March 9, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
It is Elizabeth's thirty-fifth birthday and she doesn't have much to celebrate. She is a baker and due to a screw up has to bake her cheating ex-husband's wedding cake for his new wedding. Things change fast when her grandmother gives her the gift of magic and now Elizabeth has an extra ingredient to add to all of her baked goodies.

This story is so fun! I fell in love with all of the characters right away. It is a satisfying, funny, and enchanting story that made me laugh in so many places. I'm already anticipating the next book! I recommend A Taste of Magic to readers who enjoy the lighter side of paranormal.

3.0 out of 5 stars Magical and Tasty Romance (B- Grade) March 9, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
What if you were given the ability to make magic? What would you do and who would you help? Would you get your revenge on those who have made your life miserable? These are the questions that arise for bakery owner, Elizabeth Stevens. She and her friend, Jon own A Taste of Magic Bakery. It has been a big year for Elizabeth as she is turning thirty-sex. Her ex-husband is getting married to the woman he cheating on Elizabeth with. Plus, they hired Elizabeth to bake their wedding cake. Elizabeth swallows her pride because one simple sell can help her bakery and repay the loan her lousy ex-husband Marc gave to her to keep the bakery going while they were still married.

Elizabeth's eighty-five year old grandmother Verda gives her an extra special birthday gift. It seems that their family is from a long line of gypsies and now Elizabeth has this magic she can use in the treats she bakes. She makes a wish for the person she bakes a desert for and when they eat it, the wish will come true for them. With a bit of this and a bit of that, Elizabeth can change a person's life, but she must be careful because there are consequences to her actions.

Not only is Elizabeth trying to figure out how to use this new ability of hers, but her dry spell in the romance department is over. Her new next door neighbor is Nate, a police officer, who first meets her under the most embarrassing of situations (she was drunk, couldn't find her apartment key and got stuck trying to climb through her bathroom window) is very interested in Elizabeth. Then there is her personal trainer, Kevin the gym hunk, who wouldn't mind helping Elizabeth work out in other ways, such as some bedroom aerobics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magically Romantic March 15, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Madison has created the best possible world--just like the one we live in, but with magic. I love books like that that make me believe I could one day experience magic, too. Her characters are identifiable and real, people I'd love to be friends (or more!) with, living through circumstances that make you think "there but for the grace of God go I." I cannot recommend this book enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun concept, but "light" on the romance... December 27, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
It's been one year since Liz Stevens' husband left her for another woman, and she can't seem to move on with her life. On her 35th birthday Liz learns that she's been chosen to carry on the magical legacy that has existed in her family for generations. Liz learns to express her magic through her baking, and in the process discovers that she's ready to let go of the past and start living again. But will it take a magic spell to bring love into Liz's life or does she possess that power all on her own?

I really liked the premise of this story and I thought the author did a good job of making the magic seem almost believable. Liz learns by trial and error how to cast her spells, but the magic is not always predictable. I did think that the plot seemed to lack focus though and the story felt disjointed. Liz's spells affect her ex-husband, her business partner, her sister, her best friend, her personal trainer, etc. and she spends a lot of time unraveling the chaos she unwittingly causes. That leaves precious little time to develop the relationship between Liz and her potential love interest, Nate.

The story is told in the first person from Liz's point of view, which turned out to be problematic for me. I felt like I was spending too much time in Liz's head and frankly she's pretty self-absorbed. Liz is lonely. Liz hates her ex. I felt like a reluctant therapist forced to listen to somebody drone on and on about their problems!

I did enjoy the humor, although it felt a little forced in some spots. I liked the relationship between Liz and her trainer and how she deals with the unexpected consequences of some of her spells.

Bottom Line: Flawed but entertaining; more "chick lit" than romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, fun, delicious read! February 23, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
What would you do if your wishes came true? This is the story of Elizabeth Stevens who is having a birthday that she won't ever forget.

Do you ever have one of "those" days? The ones where you wish you could change it? Elizabeth Stevens is having a rotten birthday. Not only is it the one year anniversary when her rat of a husband left her, now she has gotten suckered into making the man's wedding cake for his upcoming marriage!

But not all the day is bad...Grandma Verda passes on a "special" gift to Elizabeth that changes her life and those around her. With the ability to add a "wish" into her delicious baked goods, Elizabeth suddenly finds that sometimes you really do need to be careful what you wish for.

A Taste of Magic is a fast, fun read and will definitely be going on my recommended read shelf!
