Book Description

Meara isn’t thinking about death, that morning, when she kisses her mother good-bye, but hours later she is, as her fingers slide into the back of Mother’s shattered skull. Empty eyes – the empty eyes of her mother – stare right through her and Meara thinks her world has ended. She has no idea.
Ebullient and feisty, eighteen-year-old Meara MacDonald lives an idyllic life with her family, on the mist-enfolded Isle of Skye, dreaming of the day when she will wed her heart, the gallant Duncan MacLeod. But fate has other plans and when Aunt Deirdre and Uncle Sloan seep into their midst, Meara’s family is taken, one-by-one, for reasons she discovers are both personal and nefarious.
Mother is found dead, Da disappears, Duncan is taken by the Napoleonic Wars, Meara’s younger sister, Hannah – with child by Uncle Sloan – takes her own life and while Meara sleeps, her newborn son is snatched from her arms.
Unable to rein in her spirit or her tongue, Meara finds herself catapulted from Scotland to a household steeped in mystery in Nova Scotia where, guided by her strength of will, she will fight her way back to the remains of her family; her heart and soul.

Warning ~ This novel is NOT suitable for the faint of heart. It is NOT a fluffy romance but a gritty tale of tragedy, betrayal and deception with true love, faith and justice. The dialogue throughout is authentic Scottish dialect with true-to-life swearing, violence and sex.

She lives in the enchanting, lakeside community of Port Perry, Ontario amidst her family of eight and is working on the disturbing sequel, ‘Lost to the Mist’.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Riveting Scottish Tale... January 22, 2013
By kim
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I lost my heart and three days of my life to A Thistle in the Mist. It is the fastest read I've ever had!
The tale begins with the fiesty Meara MacDonald frisking about the Isle of Skye in Scotland. With the appearance of sinister family members, her world quickly crumbles as her mother is murdered and she loses the rest of her family.
Cramming her story with betrayal, deception, tragedy, danger and true love, Denby is a master storyteller.
The supernatural element was an added bonus that I adored.
Bottom line? This is a well-crafted book! You will find your self running a gamut of emotions with the shockingly, lush cast of characters.
I can't wait to dig into the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edge of my seat February 8, 2013
By Belinda
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The characters came to life for me. I felt every emotion Meara felt, as if it were my own. In fact, I absolutely hated Dierdre. That witch, Dierdre!!! I can't believe the way she manipulated Da!! Denby's descriptions and story line are fantastic. I couldn't put the book down. I really wanted the good guys to pervail, the bad guys to get their just desserts. I can't believe I cried when I read Denby's book. Kudos! Brilliant book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Story line was what hooked me...but June 22, 2013
By Eileen
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love reading historical fiction and the story line sounded exactly like my cup of tea, but early on, I found there were so many characters with the same names as many of the main characters in a very popular and long standing series which originated in a similar time period and also in Scotland! The first few times, I thought were coincidence... but throughout the book there were so many that it became a distraction as I have read all of the currently available volumes in the aforementioned popular series and therefore wondered if this author was also familiar with the same characters by having read the same books! Of note to me also was the detailed description (main character speaking in the first person)of several intimate scenes. Here again I felt as though I could have been reading a different author's work.

I also found, as another reader commented in her review, that regarding a particular same sex scene, which seemed to have absolutely no relevance whatsoever to the story (as in the series I refer to having read, a same sex situation was paramount to one of the main characters and was needed and used to develop a depth of character of at least one of the very main characters!... But in this one, there seemed to be no relationship to the story or the main character; an unnecessary waste of words.

Also distracting was the editing in the last chapters of the book; words either left out or left in where it was clear they should have been removed. I had the feeling the author needed to hurry in the end to meet a deadline?

I am sorry I couldn't give a better review because I did like the storyline; however,I will not read any sequels to this book.

Emotions were high when I finished this book, and what a read it has been. Daring, courageous and thoughtful was only a few adjectives that comes to mind when reading this book. It would stir every emotion in you, from love to hate when you read this thought provoking book. A book you won't want to put down even for a moment as you are drawn into the lives of Meara and Duncan MacLeod; their everyday life filled with jealousy, hatred and delusions that took away everything they have, stripping them from all that made them human.
The fight to survive and stay in control ever present as they struggled through all the lies to be a family again. The characters believable and becoming beloved friends that still lingers long after you have closed the book.

The ever growing bluff widening as these two people are kept apart by circumstances beyond their control and the love of a son keeps them fighting.
So much heartache poured from the pages and you kept on reading hoping that some where love will conquer and the evil will be stopped.
Every character's persona was well developed and got under your skin as you became part of their lives and struggles the story strong and well written to give you a highly recommended Historical Scottish Romance. Definitely one of my favorites and a book I would read again.
Well done Megan, you can be proud.

Deleted rest of review due to spoilers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not to my liking! February 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This book sounded really good, and I was looking forward to reading it. However, I got as far as chapter seven, but could go no further. Shame because the book is well written, and I'm sure it's a great story. But I don't like vulgarity, and bad language! So not for me I'm afraid.
