Editorial Reviews

Country music trio Gloriana present their much anticipated second studio album, A Thousand Miles Left Behind on Emblem Music Group/Warner Bros. Records. The band had a hand in writing all 11 tracks on the album and worked with GRAMMY Award winning producer and Emblem Music Group label owner Matt Serletic (Willie Nelson, Matchbox 20, and Aerosmith). Their single "(Kissed You) Good Night" has become the fastest rising single of the trio s career to date.

"We ve grown up a lot as a band and have really honed in on our skills and found our sound," Mike says. "On this record, we wanted to tell stories and I think people will be able to relate to a lot of these songs because they re honest and come from a place that s real," added Rachel. "Like any new act, we were finding ourselves on the first record in the recording process and as musicians," Tom says. "The new album really just feels like us, who and where we are now, to the point where we know exactly what we want to do and how to get there."

Tom, Mike, and Rachel have funneled everything they ve learned into their second album, A Thousand Miles Left Behind, intent on revealing more of themselves as artists. Gloriana worked with some of Nashville s finest songwriters for the album including Josh Kear (Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum), Hillary Lindsey (Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift), James Slater (Martina McBride and Tim McGraw), Danny Myrick (Jason Aldean and Big & Rich), Stephanie Bentley (Martina McBride and Faith Hill), among others.

Gloriana released their debut self-titled album in 2009 and quickly became the best-selling debut country act, winning the 2009 fan-voted American Music Award for Breakthrough Artist and the 2010 Academy of Country Music Award for Top New Vocal Group. They were named one of Billboard Magazine s Top Country Groups for 2010 and have continued to win over fans across the country on tour.

This has been longer coming than I had hoped, and some of the harmonies have changed now that they are down Cheyenne Kimball. But instead of letting this stop them, they went for the sweeter, the deeper cut, and they got it. Yes, this is mainstream country pop, but it is sung with conviction, and the banjos, and harmonica driven tunes are comforting in a way that never becomes too cloying. This is a superbly crafted, brightly produced album that doesn't seem too overproduced, that stands up to further listens, and gives me great hope that these folks are in it for the long haul. give them a chance, and they'll take your hear along with your ears. Solid, sweet, heart tugging country.

I have to beg to differ with reviewers who say that Gloriana is a knock-off of Lady Antebellum. I was tired of LA by the time I heard their third song. Yes, their take on country music shares a lot with Gloriana's, but LA follows the same tired formula for every song - either Charles or Hillary singing melody, with the other robotically singing a third over every note. Their harmonies have two voices and often sound forced or awkward.

Of course, this is all my opinion, so don't take it for gospel. However, I believe that Gloriana is on a level much higher than Lady Antebellum, and higher than any other current country group for that matter. They use harmonies heavily, but it never becomes tiresome. They choose interesting yet beautiful harmonic patterns and don't follow the same cut-and-dried formula followed religiously by Lady Antebellum. I would say that the band they most closely relate to is Little Big Town, and I believe that Gloriana's music is far more interesting and esthetically pleasing.

I loved the first album. I'll admit that they're not the best lyricists in the world. I joked with friends and my wife that, whoever the "couple" was in Gloriana, they must have broken up and gotten back together seven or eight times in the course of listening to the album. So the lyrics weren't always as compelling as they could be. But the musical quality was superb. Hardcore country fans might call it watered-down, but I'm a fan of great music, no matter what the genre is, so I can overlook that.

Their new album is pretty great. I'd say that the lyrics are a bit more deep than the last album. The musical quality and sweet, sweet harmonies are still there in full-force.

Dear Music Appreciators,

This is my first experience with Gloriana and I know very little about them beyond the information that is available on Amazon. Sometimes that can be a good thing though, coming to a new group with a clean slate, no expectations, uninfluenced by any hype...

Basically, this is Lady Antebellum. This is top forty twang pop. I'm guessing this group will find legions of female fans. The two male singers appear to be very attractive, with just the right mix of metrosexual country and bad-boy accents (check the tats on Blondie's right arm). And the female singer sandwiched between them is the dude fan bait.

I had high hopes for this album when I heard the twangy, opening guitar lick and the harmonies on the words "old" and "soul," but then things quickly got less interesting (lines like "...everything I need is in your eyes," can seem awfully contrived in this kind of musical setting). Then a song about making love in a parking lot, then a song about making love in a bedroom, then a song about kissing on a porch, then a pretty good little song called "Carolina Rose" that sounds like something Kenny Rogers might have done in his better days. Songs about falling in love and breaking up , the obligatory small town memories song, a patriotic, support-the-troops song - it's all here, and Gloriana may look good and sound good, and this album may even have many enjoyable moments, but for me there is just something missing.

This album is like grape soda - looks good, tastes good, many people might claim its their favorite, but I won't be craving it without some caffeine.

Sincerely,

Constant Listener

This is Gloriana's second album. This would have actually been the best country album of 2012 if Jason Aldean hadn't released Night Train. This is the first album since the departure of Cheyenne Kimball. Gloriana hasn't changed anything except the fact that they are now a trio. Actually, everything is good about this album. Gloriana still brings the good songs with this anticipated second album.

Gold Rush (5/5)
Sunset Lovin (5/5)
Wanna Take You Home (5/5)
(Kissed You) Good Night (5/5)
Carolina Rose (4.5/5)
Go On... Miss Me (4.5/5)
Can't Shake You (4.5/5)
Soldier Song (4/5)
Turn My World Around (5/5)
Doing It Our Way (5/5)
Where My Heart Belongs (4/5)

Looks like Gloriana is going the expected path.
