Editorial Reviews

Songs with a good tune and rousing lyrics both mirrored and inspired the events of the American Civil War (1861-1865). They told tales of battle, slavery, emancipation, victory, and defeat, and a century and a half later, they enshrine the shattered brotherhood of a nation and the lessons taught by war. Popular American folksinger Tom Glazer (1914-2003) knew a good tune when he heard one, and on A Treasury of Civil War Songs, Glazer's crystal clear voice spins out classic songs that made history, while historian Patrick Warfield s liner notes take us deeper into the history that made the songs. 25 tracks, 58 minutes and 20+ page booklet with extensive notes and historical photos.

I like music and lyrics that I can understand.

The arrangements are of Glazer singing solo for the most part, though he has background vocalists or even a chorus in some of the songs.

Unfortunately, it is a short version of the album without Tom's excellent commentary about each song.

In remembrance of the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, Smithsonian Folkways has reissued Tom Glazer's 1973 collection of wartime songs. Many of these compositions are so deeply ingrained into the American musical lexicon that listeners have all but stopped thinking about their origins. So while it's unsurprising that "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Dixie" were each canonized amid the War Between the States, it's surprising to find that "The Yellow Rose of Texas" (whose period lyrics will make twenty-first century sensibilities wince) and "Goober Peas" were also created amid the songwriting boom of the nineteenth century. The rise of song publishing was fueled not only by a growing American appetite for music making, but the development of war reporting in all manner of written form. Topical songwriting became a way of recording events, defining sides and rallying support. The folk tradition (and loosely-formed nineteenth-century sense of intellectual property) is heard in the sharing of melodies between "John Brown's Body" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic," as well as "Maryland, My Maryland" borrowing its tune from "O Tannenbaum." Glazer and a backing chorus sing mostly to a solo guitar, reflecting an era when music lovers were more likely to engage in making music than listen to it. The reissue's booklet includes period photos of soldiers, musicians and most interestingly, soldier musicians, as well as extensive historical and song notes from University of Maryland musicologist Patrick Warfield. I like music and lyrics that I can understand. This CD is full of easy to understand patriotic songs that mirrored and inspired tales about a soldiers life during the War between the states. At first glance listening to old Civil War ballads sounds kind of gruesome. But the songs are haunting battlefield poetry set to music. Soldiers sang to pass the time, to morn or celebrate battlefield deaths or were a way to express their deep longing to go home and live in peace. Today we all long for peace just as they did in the days that brought forth these songs. I find Tom Glazer easy to listen to and he has a pleasant voice.

I purchased this hoping that it would be the 2013 CD version of the 1961 double album "Tom Glazer Sings Songs of The Civil War". Unfortunately, it is a short version of the album without Tom's excellent commentary about each song. I'm disappointed that it is not the FULL double album, but HIGHLY recommend it. Tom has an excellent voice and The liner notes are excellent. The songs on this ARE from the 1961 album, but remastered for CD. Fortunately, I made cassette copies of the Original 1961 records I made years ago, but would still love to find the full albums on CD, along with his other historical albums "Tom Glazer Sings Songs of the Revolution" and "Tom Glazer Sings Songs of the West". Which I made cassette copies of years ago and still play regularly. As a previous reviewer mentions, I would love to have Aura Lea, Lorena, Weeping Sad and Lonely (The most popular Civil War song) and The Wearing of the Grey on this CD as they are on the original 1961 album. With these, this would be a 10+++ CD!!!

I truly didnt know some of the songs sung where of the Civil War period. We are celebrating our 150th Anniversary of the War between the States and this album will enhance your knowledge of what was being said in lyric form. Most of the songs have to do with the Confederacy and are well sung. We are using the CD for background music during our local museum exhibit of the Civil War and it adds so much to the visual presentation.

I was personally unfamiliar with this collection of songs before this re-release, and was very moved upon hearing it, this despite the fact that my ancestors had no direct connection to the Civil War (they were busy staying out of the way of the Tsar, the Kaiser, and the Emperor Franz Josef, or making a living in London . . . .) Tom Glazer's simple, unadorned interpretations, guitar augmented by banjo here and there, and some backup singing and choruses where appropriate. But the simplicity is a virtue -- it allows the words to live and breathe, and the melodies to come through clearly. This is not only a keeper -- it's one to give multiple copies of, to as many friends as one has who might care about the music.

This is an extensive collection of Civil War songs, sung by Tom Glazer. I'd forgotten who Glazer was, but he is a legendary folksinger, and it was looking him up that made me realize he had been the singer on several records I had as a small child! Note that this album is released by Smithsonian Folkways, which is associated with the Smithsonian Museum, so this is authentic and "real" stuff, not commercialized.

The arrangements are of Glazer singing solo for the most part, though he has background vocalists or even a chorus in some of the songs. Instrumentals are relatively subdued to let us focus on the song and the words. Sound quality is excellent. If you want to play this for small children (which I think would be an excellent idea!)keep in mind that some of these songs use period language in the lyrics, notably "darkies", which is not a term you want the kids to pick up and use. Be prepared for a discussion of how things have changed! Note that this is a caution about being ready to discuss with kids, I am not criticizing the album, it would be a shame to edit these lyrics.

I'm sure the producers of this were excited to use a legendary name like Glazer, but somehow for my purposes (helping me get the feel of the times as I'm reading about Civil War history), I'd feel better about the songs if they were sung by a group like soldiers around the campfire! But you can't go wrong with this album if you want to hear these songs and absorb yourself in the times.
