Book Description

Nineteen year old Selina has a life many would love–praised, served, and spoiled. The only problem is she didn't choose that life, because it comes with a heavy price. She will soon die, like all Healers, when the mark of Y'dom completes its pattern around her neck, and hers is nearly complete. Her gift of healing powers are sought after by all, including the ruling prince of a neighboring kingdom to heal his ailing father. Seeing this as her last chance for adventure, she makes the journey to Vastorn.

En route she encounters Faldon, the fallen leader of the feyquin, and his band of rogues. Cursed by a demon and swearing vengeance on the human who shares his curse, Faldon does all he can to stop Selina from completing her journey. But he also knows how to save Selina, if she survives the night mares.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Fantasy June 12, 2009
By Ruth
Format:Paperback
I read this in one sitting. The book opens with a warning. A strange young man has warned Selina that she must not go to Vastorn to heal the sick king. The question, of course, is why, and it is this question that underlies her journey to Vastorn. Along the way, a group of feyquin (similar to horses) stop her in an effort to prevent her from going to the king.

The best part of this book is that the author kept me guessing as to why she shouldn't go to Vastorn and who doesn't want her to get there. There was another surprise that popped up that I didn't forsee, but I don't want to ruin the surprise. Overall, the book chronicles her journey to Vastorn (because she's determined to get there, no matter what). But the question is really, should she go or not? It was a fun read, especially the parts about the feyquin and the unexpected friendship that she develops with them. I also enjoyed the night mares who proved that not all is what it seems. I recommend reading it if you love horses, fantasy, or suspense.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very pleasant read. September 25, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I ran across this novella just on a whim while browsing around less-prominent fantasy reading in the Kindle store. The premise sounded interesting enough and with the low price I figured "why not?".

I'm glad I did, as it was a good story and a very enjoyable read. As it was a short novella, it didn't have deep character development but the main characters were still intriguing enough, and the world in which the story takes place is impressively fleshed-out for such a short narrative. What I found especially unique was the way in which the author describes the feyquin, a magical sentient race of horse-like beings, from the point of view of someone to whom horses are not a familiar animal, and thus describing them as if the reader also had never encountered horses.

The ending was not at all what I expected. I'm not sure I "liked" the ending itself so much as I liked that it did not go the route tradition would generally lead it.

This is definitely worth the read and I will likely be looking at other Kindle edition stories from this author.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT A ROMANCE June 17, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Terrible very short story with unsatisfying end. The characters were weak, plot plodded along as much as the characters did. Which was the whole plotline. Imagery was lacking. Thank god I didn't spend money on this. Whole read boiled down to one word "disapponting".

2.0 out of 5 stars No HEA here June 19, 2011
By J. A.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This novella had a fairly interesting premise, but the heroine spent too much time acting like a spoiled willful child, which, to be fair, she was. Too often, though, I would have been happy to slap some sense into her. There could have been some redemption for the story at the end, but the author clearly does not believe in happily ever after. It was extremely disappointing and downright depressing to me. Don't bother with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting little story, with the potential for more. January 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A short story that was interesting to read. I think it could have been made into a longer story, but it worked well the way it is. A story of sacrifice, and finding out how to make the best of what you have. There are enough details to give you a good idea of the world this is set in and the characters are developed decently for a short story, not excellently, but decently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Novella September 8, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was an amazing story. I read it months ago before I started blogging or even knew what blogging was. It's haunted me ever since though since I never reviewed it once I did start blogging lol.
The story centers around a nineteen year old girl named Selina whose only mission in life to heal with the special gift she was born with. However each healing she offers brings her closer to death, which is noted by the marking on her neck. Each time she heals the marking magically adds to itself until it encircles her neck and she dies.
On this healing expedition she has to travel really far to heal the king of a neighboring kingdom. Despite being told not to go because the trek is dangerous, she knows she will die soon and it may be her only chance to have some adventure in her short life.
She meets Faldon he's a shape shifter under a curse. He was once the leader of the Feyquin which are magical horses, the exact opposite of the well known Nitemares of many myths and lore. Faldon wants nothing more than to find the demon that cursed him and the human who shares his curse in the reverse fashion.
He despises humans but something about Selina draws him to her and while they're friendship is rocky it's also strong.
I found not one error in novella, so kudos to the editor!
I absolutely loved this story. I without a doubt teared up at the end of it, my heart breaking for Faldon and Selina.
I only wish this author had written a sequel so I could see what became of Faldon and the Feyquin, or even a prequel to learn more about Selina's life before this last trek.
This is a great story and I think many people will love.
I give this book 5 of 5 paws and apologize for the long delay in my review

1.0 out of 5 stars What just happened? February 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Honestly I can't believe I perservered to the end but I wanted to be fair. What was the book about exactly? Nothing I think, because both the plot and the characters had no personality and it was child-like in style, but not in a good way, more like when there is something missing. I am so glad it came free otherwise I would be upset. Not for me!!!!!!!!!!

It started out so well and very interesting but the relationship ends before it even begins. I would love to have read this story flushed out in to an actual book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Could've been good.
I don't realize at the time of getting this that it was a short story. So the story seemed rushed but the worst part was the ending. It wasn't even tragic, just stupidity.
