From Booklist

Acclaimed sf writer Czerneda turns to fantasy in her latest well-imagined outing. Crafting the mystical world of Marrowdell, she populates the valley with a variety of magical creatures, including house toads, dragons, and a beautiful but restless heroine who holds the key to Marrowdell’s security. Although she longs to travel beyond the well-trod byways of her village, Jenn Nalynn, the miller’s daughter, is moored to Marrowdell by the curse of her birth. Turn-born, she unwittingly provides the balance between Marrowdell and the darkly feral Verge. Precariously pinned together, these two worlds can only coexist if Jenn, who is defiantly beginning to flex her magical muscles, remains firmly rooted in place. Genre fans will appreciate all the vividly detailed attention to world building embedded in this entertaining fable. --Margaret Flanagan

Review

“An enchanting and gentle fable, rich with detail and characters you will love.”
(Charles de Lint)

"A warm and intricate fantasy opus with large themes woven into a charming story."
(Charlaine Harris)

“Science fiction author Czerneda will charm fantasy readers with multidimensional characters, a vivid setting, and powerful themes of hope and renewal.”
(Publishers Weekly)

"Known for her powerful and insightful sf novels, Czerneda brings the same exacting sensibility to her brilliant fantasy debut. Her characters are both charming and believable, and Jenn, her friend Wisp, and the soldier Bannan stand out as memorable and utterly real. While this can be read as a stand-alone, there are plenty of possibilities for more stories in the world outside Marrowdell. Fans of L.E. Modesitt Jr. and Charles de Lint will love this fantastic and magical fable."
(Library Journal)

"I was captivated by Julie Czerneda's A Turn of Light. Yep, she used her writerly powers and sucked me right in. Many fantasy novels out there are *about* magic. Few, like Julie's, embody it."
(Kristen Britain)

"Luminous and beguiling. With Marrowdell and its enchanting inhabitants, Julie Czerneda has conjured a world that readers can sink into and disappear. I lost myself to this tale that is, by turns, lovely, lyrical, and thrilling. This book is a feast for the mind and the heart."
(Lesley Livingston)

A Turn of Light is a gorgeous creation. Julie Czerneda's world and characters are richly layered and wonderful—full of mystery, hope and, most of all, heart. Come spend some time in Marrowdell. It's worth the journey. And be polite to the toads.”
(Anne Bishop)

"Infused with idyllic enchantment, Julie Czerneda weaves a heart-warming bucolic tale, packed with magic both wild and strange -- a top notch fantasy read!"

This first fantasy novel by science fiction troubadour Julie Czerneda, A Turn Of Light, slips the reader into complete wonder. Julie has always entertained us in truly immense ways with her stories of far yonder places in science fiction. This one truly shines as a fantasy debut.

It is the "coming of age" story of Jenn who languishes in a frontier village. Jenn has "romance travel fever" and seeks to find adventure beyond her erstwhile circumstances. Her invisible friend (ha! a dragon) tries to keep her in the village, but Jenn, being of marriageable age decides to magic herself a husband that will take her on the road. Oops! Jenn's world becomes magic enchantment with gorgeous storytelling.

The "invisible friend" dragon, turned husband, ( I did say oops...) is the least of her troubles. A horse, more magic, true love and mismatched circumstances launch Jenn on a journey filled with trouble, albeit with more fun than you can imagine. But, not for the reasons you think. The Verge is the in-between world that special Jenn is trapped in, because leaving Morrowdale would release the Verge's evil. Jenn is the catalyst that holds sinister forces in check.

In this rousing chronicle, the reader will be completely taken away on a fantastic tale of discovery, adventure, treasure and amazement. The Verge and a wonderful coming of age story with rich descriptions and detailed world building leaves nothing disappointing. Terrific fantasy, in a hugely overcrowded market, "A Turn Of Light" contributes a shining (pun intended) example of what a masterful story teller can do with dragons, guardian toads and magic, instead of space ships.

I absolutely loved this book. I can't wait for the next one... A Play Of Shadow. "A Turn Of Light" is more than superior. It should be found at the top of your list.

Let me start by saying I'm not a writer, and I know that will come through very clearly in my attempt at this review.

I was lucky enough at Christmas time to win an advanced reading copy of this wonderful book. I devoured it page after page. This is not your typical "coming of age" story. There are lots of twists and turns and toads thrown in to keep you turning page after page.

I'm not going to tell you what the story is about, who the characters are (you can get all that by reading the description and then reading the book), that's not what I want to do here. What I want to tell you is that this is a book that is full of characters you will come to care about and if you're like me, you'll become invested in what's going to happen to them next.

So no, this is not your typical story about a girl coming of age, a horse and a handsome man. Does it have those things? Yes, maybe, sort of. But it has toads and magic and eggs and dragons and a lot more things you really must read about yourself.

I loved this so much, I bought the Kindle version first thing this morning even though I own my lovely beautiful autographed ARC copy. I wanted to make sure everyone knew that I'm a verified owner, and that even though I was able to read the book for free, I liked it so much I bought it as soon as it was out. That should tell you something.

If you've not read any of Julie's books before, what are you waiting for?

A Turn of Light by Julie E. Czerneda brings to life a beautiful new fantasy world and deep character development for all the inhabitants of a small (but magical) village called Marrowdell. While A Turn of Light is paced quite slowly, the relationships that Jenn is able to develop and the mystery that eventually unfolds makes for an enjoyable fantasy reading experience. You will definitely not get through this one quickly, but once I got to the end I was happy to have had the experience!
Note: I received A Turn of Light from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The village of Marrowdell is an isolated pioneer community, but it is also the place where two worlds overlap, and at the turn of light--sunset--the world of magic known as the Verge can briefly be seen.

Jenn Nalynn belongs to both Verge and Marrowdell, but even she doesn't know how special she is--or that her invisible friend Wisp is actually a dragon sent to guard her... and keep her from leaving the valley. But Jenn longs to see the world, and thinking that a husband will help her reach this goal, she decides to create one using spells. Of course, everything goes awry, and suddenly her "invisible friend" has been transformed into a man. But he is not the only newcomer to Marrowdell, and far from the most dangerous of those who are suddenly finding their way to the valley...

Strengths:
A Turn of Light is a hefty book at 800 pages, but this allows for a whole lot of character development.

Received from Penguin Canada for Review.

Unknowingly bound to two worlds that overlap, the village of Marrowdell and the Verge, Jenn Nalynn was born of light and cursed with the power to destroy them both. Jenn's heart desire is to travel the world and see what more it has to offer than that of the village of Marrowdell. Little does she know, Jenn harnesses the ability to destroy her home, and that of Verge, a world home to magic, dragons, and other mystical creatures, if she were ever to leave...

The first three words that came to mind when I finished reading A Turn of Light were: Beautiful, Captivating, and Magical. One may be intimidated by the length of the novel at first glance; however, I can undoubtedly say that I was so engrossed into the story and Julie's world building that I enjoyed reading every single page.

My favorite element of the novel would have to be the characters. Each character felt real and distinct, and they all served a special purpose in the plot. Known for her Sci-Fi novels, Julie E. Czerneda's has mastered the art of engaging her readers through compelling plots and dynamic characters.

I absolutely loved the magical world of the Verge that Julie E. Czerneda has created, and I'm definitely looking forward to reading A Play of Shadow, "the sequel to Turn". I recommend A Turn of Light to all readers who enjoy Fantasy novels.

Must Read! Highly Recommended! 5/5
