As a high school classmate of the author Karen Kain, I knew somewhat of her life with her daughter through the few years we had connected on Facebook. But I had no idea of the challenges and reality of what her life was like while raising and providing Lorrin with a most remarkable life. From the very first chapter I was immersed in their life and world. Lorrin experienced things most teens dream of - competing in a beauty pageant, swimming with dolphins, camping at Big Sur and having her Quinceañera party! I can't even count the times I had to stop because I couldn't read through my tears. But, it is an awe inspiring story that will enlighten everyone that reads it. You'll never look at the parent of a disabled child or the child in the same way again.

This book will change your life! I have such admiration and respect for Karen and her daughter Lorrin, their doctors, nurses, family and friends. The love and dedication Karen shows for her daughter is heartwarming and uplifting - her strength, will, dedication and fight - empowering! I love the way Karen did her very best to give her daughter as normal a life as possible despite her disabilities. I especially loved that Lorrin was able to make friends in school and have sleep overs. I highly recommend this book to anyone!

This beautifully written book, details the life and times of 2 courageous and brave ladies. The mother and daughter team of Karen and Lorrin Kain teach us that a full and enjoyable life is possible, no matter the limits of disability. I have read "inspirational" books before; A unique life fully lived takes inspiration to another level. In a world where large percentages of children are sick or disabled, this book is a shining light in the darkness.

When I started reading “A Unique Life Fully Lived, A Personal Journey of Love, Hope and Courage, by Lorrin and Karen Kain”, I was expecting to go on an emotional journey with Karen and Lorrin. Little did I know how profound a journey this would be. I never had the privilege of meeting Lorrin during this life, but through every page of this book, I felt the force of her energy bursting through her mother’s words. I could feel Lorrin’s spirit in each and every page–it was that profound. I would read a chapter and have to put the book down to cry, to pray and to reflect on what truly “living” meant to me. Raising a special needs child can be very isolating and lonely. As parents, we are literally thrust into a life that we weren’t prepared for. The struggles and challenges of daily life are often too much to bear. All of the negative emotions–fear, anger, despair–weigh us down and life becomes a series of repetitive routines and hurdles to climb. This book gave me that perspective of being able to embrace the journey out of the darkness and into the light. There will always be obstacles. There will always be bad days. There will always be times when we feel there is no hope. But the lesson I learned is that no matter how difficult the journey, it’s still our journey and we have to live it with all of the love, light and positivity that we can. A Unique Life Fully Lived is Karen Kain’s highly personal story of her relationship with her child, who suffered severe brain injury following a routine infant vaccination (ultimately leading to her untimely death at 15). The love that the author had for her daughter, both while she was alive, and following her death, is powerful and enduring – this is the strongest message in the book; the second is that for Karen, her daughter has been one of her most important spiritual teachers.

Where the book disappoints is in its desperate need for some good, objective editing.

Events in Lorrin’s life jump from one era to another for no particular reason, forcing the reader to put them in chronological order. And it would be useful to know specifically how Karen resolved some of the challenges with which she was faced, to provide guidance for other parents navigating such fraught waters.

Most distracting is that Lorrin’s story is burdened by Karen’s own intense emotions, most of which could have been cut without in any way lessening the impact of her message. Parents of disabled or vaccine-injured children will surely resonate with Karen’s emotional roller coaster. But potentially useful material is buried in masses of emotional indulgence, and I found myself skimming through entire chapters, looking eagerly for the real information buried in these pages.

Because the message in this book, and the subject matter, is important – however flawed – and because there is an outstanding resource list at the back, I’m giving A Unique Life Fully Lived three stars. I hope that the next edition will address some of the issues that hold it back from five!
