Intelligent Xmas Pop,
By
This review is from: A Very Rosie Christmas (Audio CD)
My tastes in holiday music tend toward the novelty end of the spectrum, so it's no surprise that my favorite track on A Very Rosie Christmas is her cover of "Christmas Don't Be Late" (by Ross Bagdasarian aka David Seville aka The Chipmunks). In Thomas' hands, though, it's transformed into a wistful piece of melancholia--full of nostalgia for a lost childhood Christmas, and with a hint of serious spiritual purpose.
There are other more traditional holiday songs here, like "Winter Wonderland" and "Let It Snow", and Thomas turns in credible performances of these. But, as with similar releases from Aimee Mann (One More Drifter in the Snow) and Leigh Nash (Wishing for This), the standout tracks are thoughtful originals like "River" and "Alone at Christmastime" that might just be worthy of listening all year 'round. This is a grown-up Christmas album, in the best sense of the word.

This is Rosie's second CD in my collection. After being totally knocked out by If Songs Could Be Held, I decided to check out her Christmas set. As a singer, she reaches an intensity that translates into her recordings. "O Come O Emmanuel" is a good example how her breathy vocals build with the keyboards to a transcendent experience, "O come thou Lord of Light." "Snow Day" is a haunting instrumental with Rosie's lovely piano light and airy like snowfall. Jeremiah Austin's trumpet on "Let It Snow" announces Rosie's take on this sweet toe-tapper. My favorite track is the upbeat "Why Can't It Be Christmastime All Year?" that Rosie co-wrote, "Raise your hand if you wish it was Christmastime all year! We do, we do, we do." "A Very Rosie Christmas!" is a holiday set well worth spinning during the holidays. Enjoy!

Ok, so we all know that Rosie Thomas is an absolute doll.
She is best live due to her robust personality that just can't be contained in a recording, however, with each new record more and more of her intense and infectious joy slips out around the edges. THIS RECORD IS AMAZING! not only does she redo some holiday standards (that she totally breathes life into), she also has some really great original christmas songs that are totally infectious and just great! What she does with the Chipmunk Song makes me cry. Her Christmas tour this year was, well, more than just special. it was beautiful. We laughed, We cried... We all had a moment where life came into focus... Thanks, Rosie. PLEASE BUY THIS ALBUM FOR EVERYONE YOU KNOW!

I just happened to hear about this CD on AOL music a few years ago and loved it. If you like Suzanne Vega or Shawn Colvin, you'll probably like this CD. Each track has a very folksy, familial, and fun feel to it and gets you in the Christmas mood.

I received the song "Why Can't It Be Christmastime All Year?" as a free MP3 from Amazon last year. I enjoyed that song so much I bought the CD. I really appreciate an Artist who can create original Christmas music because most of it is so unoriginal. The CD has a Folksy,Pop sound that doesn't try so hard. It almost sounds like they had as much a good time making the recording as I had in listening to it.In my opinion "Why Can't It Be Christmastime All Year?" will be a classic song. I liken it to The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping. Trust me around June yule still be listening to "A Very Rosie Christmas".
