When I originally read this story as a submission for my noir zine PLOTS WITH GUNS back in the early 00's, I just felt it grab me. The vibe, the mood, the characters, the setting, all of it locked in like a good drummer and bassist. Jim's gone on to write plenty of other good stories and a couple of novels, but this story, a good take on the P.I. stories I was kind of becoming bored with until this showed up, it's got me by the throat.
