I haven’t spent a great deal of study on the subject of fasting. I just finished reading a book, A Walk in the Wilderness by Lori Greenwood on fasting for both physical and spiritual reasons.
In her book, she covers topics centered on the physical side and how our bodies respond badly to the bad treatment most of us give it. Umm, yeah that sounds about right. The ole statement, Garbage in, Garbage out came to mind while I was reading this book.
I agree that the majority of our problems can be traced back to poor decisions on our part. I also believe that God made our bodies and he doesn’t make mistakes.
After reading this book, I understand more about the physical reasons for fasting and the benefits that can be gained. I am still in a searching phase on the spiritual reasons or expectations.
So while I wouldn’t claim this was the final answer on fasting, this book did provide me with a good amount of information and topics to think about as I continue my study on fasting for spiritual reasons.
Here is a little information on the book as provided by the publisher: Jesus had a lot to say about fasting. He taught on fasting in Matthew chapters 6, 9, and 17; Mark chapter 9; and Luke chapters 5 and 8. After receiving John's baptism in water, Jesus fasted forty days in the wilderness. He taught that fasting was one of the three foundations of the faith in His Sermon on the Mount. Yet, in light of everything that Jesus taught on this topic, many Christians fail to develop a lifestyle that includes fasting. Fasting is a powerful force. It's a weapon against demonic forces. It's a method to restore and maintain health. It's one of the most overlooked and under-utilized tools available to every believer!Read more ›
