She blends those classical sensibilities with modern sounds and textures that demonstrates a very well honed control over the music.

Penka Kouneva, already known in the industry as a master orchestrator, shows us that she is also just as competent and skilled as a composer. A Warrior's Odyssey is not the score to any game or film, but rather a standalone album, a project of passion for Miss Kouneva, that attempts to tell the story through the music itself.

Much of what the album offers is hybrid scoring, mixing heavy electronica with the modern orchestra, a combination made famous by Hans Zimmer. Miss Kouneva offers us her own unique contribution, giving us a new depth and complexity often missing from the genre. There are also several tracks on the album with little or no electronic processing though, and they are exquisite.

Several of the tracks seem to end after they've made their primary statement. While this works in the film world when the track is following a scene, seeing as the album was composed on its own, I would have loved to have heard these tracks come to a more natural conclusion. As it stands, some of them are a little too brief for the material they've introduced.

Overall though, the music is highly enjoyable, and the final track brings an exciting conclusion. Definitely worth a listen, and with mixing by the master engineer John Rodd, it is polished to the core.

A very attractive experience for the ears, A Warrior's Odyssey showcases Penka Kouneva's musical brilliance. The music is rocking, electric, yet sensitive and emotional at the same time. Music like this is what makes video game playing so addictive and dynamic.

Penka Kouneva is one of the only female composers I have heard whose work seems to really 'have it'. To put things more precisely, she has the same innate emotional gut as a Poledouris, a Barry, or a Goldsmith. However, there are a few tracks on this release that display weak moments; most such moments are in action cues.

When the composer provides action accompaniment she often follows patterns for such laid by Hans Zimmer etc. . These are familiar. Since they are, one should strive to try something different. Nonetheless, when she creates something powerful, it truly is so. Worth listening to.

Composer Penka Kouneva has produced a truly inspiring and beautiful musical journey that transports the listener. Backed by an all-star cast of collaborators, Kouneva weaves together an evocative blend of powerful action and soulful pathos. Rich in thematic integrity and beautiful orchestration, one can't help but lose themselves in the performances. I recommend this album without hesitation for anyone with an appreciation for film scores, game soundtracks or classical music -- the experience is as rewarding as it enjoyable. Bravo to Penka and all involved in creating this masterwork!

Enjoyed listening to Penka Kouneva's album! Was interesting to hear a blend of Penka's rich classical and Hollywood film backgrounds that those tracks portray. It shows what Penka can really do with orchestral instruments, guitars, percussions and electronics, organizing all of these instruments in one, organic material that makes one's imagination wonder along fantasy kingdoms, beautiful worlds, dark realms and everything in between. Especially enjoyed cues like "Minotaur Battle" and "Chase Through Crete" that combine ethnic, energetic rhythms that make you look behind your shoulder imagining monsters and assassins chasing you.. Would be glad to hear more albums from Penka who loves to use as much live instruments as possible but at the same time who skillfully able to create a contemporary palette with a unique sound.

This impressive album contains everything I would have loved to find on a Cinematic Album. It blends today's style of dramatic and cinematic music on a top standard BUT, at the same time, Penka Kouneva has been able to bring in a lot of melodic writing and contrasting materials, such as the use of chamber ensembles, something that is not very common to find on a blockbuster score. Her writing is superb, very well balanced and showcases an incredible, musical craft. The blend between full orchestral, chamber and hybrid styles is impeccable. The audio quality is also amazing, featuring a pristine mix and a top notch team. This is a composer to keep looking for. Bravo.
