Conflict and edginess with too much language and sex killed an otherwise well written novel for me. Yes, I should have previewed the author more before choosing this book, but having travelled in Provence, and loving the romantic atmosphere, I couldn't resist and jumped in blind.

It's a 50'ish, middle age, wedding for the heroine and her hunk of a man, Brody. All's well as they stay at her friend's place/gite in beautiful Provence until the daughters show up, one with a new, instant, 'love' she met on the plane, and the other one, the sensible daughter. Can love heal all wounds?

The story and the general characterizations are fine; however, I wasn't particularly drawn to any of them. Ms. Sussman writes with good descriptions and flow, and the chapters move along. Here's the big But: the numerous f-bombs and gd's and too detailed sex scenes, plagues and ruins the romance and constantly distracts from the writing. Maybe it's just me and my Puritan sensibilitites, so I don't want to tank the book completely, but I did want other readers to know what to expect.

After reading the description of the book and the romantic idea of a wedding taking place in Provence(a place I have always wanted to travel to), I decided to read the book.

That being said, I enjoyed the evolving relationships in the story, between mother and daughters, friends, brothers, etc. I didn't enjoy the constant use of the f-word and the graphic sex scenes. I read many different types of books all the time, and it just seems that the graphic sex scenes and the constant f-bombs were out of context with the story.

Olivia is in her fifties and about to marry Brody, a widower and the love of her life. What's even more special is that their wedding will be held at Olivia's best friend's bed and breakfast in the south of France. Olivia's two daughters attend, as do Brody's mother and his best friend, a rakish playboy named Jake.

Carly is Olivia's good daughter. The one who went to college, interned at Google, and holds a powerful job with an internet dating site. Her boyfriend is rich and powerful--and her boss--yet he can never quite give her what she wants, including accompanying her to France for her mother's wedding. Nell, on the other hand, is single, an actress based in LA, and the daughter who was always somehow expected to bring trouble to her divorced parents.

When Nell shows up for her mom's wedding in Provence with Gavin, a stranger she met on the plane, the wedding weekend is suddenly headed toward disaster.

I really enjoyed this book for the different story lines of love and loss, and for the cast of fascinating characters. Brody is a stunning leading man, a dashing vet from Wyoming. Gavin, the bad boy mystery man, is a colorful and often frightening character. I also liked the book for the mother-daughter relationships and how Olivia handles her two very different daughters.

This book is a perfect summer read.

Hoping for a quiet, intimate wedding surrounded by their closest friends and family, mid-life sweethearts Olivia and Brody are enchanted with the beauty of Provence. But soon after their arrival, trouble brews when the owner of their inn – Olivia’s best friend Emily – learns that her husband cheated on her with another woman. This calamity is followed by the revelation that Olivia’s eldest daughter Nell has brought an unannounced companion with her, the man who sat next to her on the airplane to France, a stranger whose only connection to Nell is a strong sexual attraction. Younger daughter Carly is the next to arrive, sans beau, when her Silicon Valley boyfriend couldn’t get time off work to make the trip to France. As her guests stew over their unsuccessful romances, Olivia’s fretting over her own impending nuptials kicks into high gear.

I picked up a copy of this book, knowing that it was not my usual fare, because it was my store’s Book Club title for August. It really wasn’t for me.

The plot is a soap opera. Every guest at this wedding is having some sort of issue in the romance department. The best friend’s husband cheated, one daughter’s too promiscuous while the other is stuck in a dead relationship with a workaholic. One woman’s husband left her. The best man is a lifelong bachelor who can’t commit to any one woman. Sounds like a mess, right? It is. It seems like no one is at the wedding to celebrate the love between Olivia and Brody – no, everyone is just trying to escape their own problems in magical Provence.

Yet, despite this miasma of negativity, the power of Love and last-minute revelations ensures that all stories find suitably happy endings, with all loose ends neatly tied up, by the final page.

A Wedding in Provence is about that one thing we all want. Love. The characters are all at various stages of wants and needs when it comes to love. Olivia and Brady (the couple whose wedding is referred to in the title) are gently and madly in love. The kind of love that comes when you’re older (they’re in the 50’s) and more appreciative for something you thought you might not find ever again.

Olivia’s daughters, Carly and Nell, are both in and out of love. Carly is in a relationship with Wes, and though they have a lot in common, they really aren’t there for each other. Nell, after losing her love in a horrible way, is now searching for it everywhere, even with a stranger she meets on the plane.

Brody’s mother, Fanny, is trig to recover from her husband of 50+ years leaving her.

The couple whose home the wedding is at, are trying to get past infidelity.

It’s a story of relationships, love, and family. I loved it from the first page to the last page.
