Book Description

This is the story of two women, mother and daughter, based on true events.

In 1899, Julia, at the age of twenty, travels on her own to New York in hot pursuit of the man whose child she carries. Living life with passionate intensity, across the social realm, Julia struggles to survive in turbulent times.

Her daughter Sonja, born of that first tempestuous union but brought up in Finland by a stepfather when Julia remarries, has the same spirit and courage as her mother. Her wanderlust takes her to Paris and then on to New York, where, for a short time, she leads a ‘Great Gatsby’- life in the aftermath of the Wall street crash.

The backdrop of the Great Depression and its impact on society then, provides an interesting parallel to the present times.

Set in Stockholm, Helsinki, Monte Carlo, Paris and New York from 1899 through to the 1930’s, this is a story with a true eye-witness feel.

A large part of the narrative is provided by the texts of the letters actually exchanged between the main characters.

Author’s note: This story is based on family letters, postcards and diaries written by my great-aunt Julia and her daughter Sonja. You can see photos of the real women behind the story on my website: http://www.susanne-oleary.com

I am at the moment writing a sequel, as so many readers wanted to know what happened to Sonja.

I would like to add that the English I use is British, ie 'colour' rather than 'color' and so on. The spellchecker in my computer is set to British too and the usage of words and phrasings might be different to US ways (which in English English is correct, rather than the US 'different from'). This might appear as 'wrong' spelling and grammatical errors at times to American readers

I always stick to British English because that's what I was brought up with and, as the books are also read in the UK and other European countries, I feel this is right for me and my readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly amazing story April 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I do not usually read biographies or non fiction books but there was something compelling about this story that made me want to pick it up. While A Woman's Place is not fully non fiction it is based on the true story of the authors family. What an amazing story it is! In the modern world their stories would still be unusual but in the world of the turn of the century it is extraordinary.

What made this story particularly good to me was the way it was written. Susanne O'Leary writes this book in a way that captures the feeling of the time in which Julia and Sonja lived. It is easy to be swept up into times past and imagine the lives that they lived.

The amazing thing is that the style changes when the story changes between the mother and the daughter. You can really immerse yourself in the personality of the two women.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Extraordinary Women December 27, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Based on the true stories of two of the author's ancestors, "A Woman's Place" is an excellent story. Culled from letters and diaries, O'Leary paints a picture of two women who were strong and independent in a way we take for granted today, but don't often perceive as the norm then. Truly these were women ahead of their time in many ways. Not only is their life story interesting, but I found the insight into life in both Europe and America during the time the story takes place very interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Think Jane Austen ! August 12, 2011
By Beeshon
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a delightful story of two women, mother (Julia) and daughter (Sonja). Told in two parts, it centres on Julia's story first, starting in the late 19th century, followed by Sonja's story in diary form in the second part. It is based on true facts, provided by letters and diaries of the author's great aunt and her daughter.

It's beautifully and compellingly written as we follow Julia's life from her early twenties between two continents; she's young, a little impetuous, but warm, caring and resolute. These are qualities which she passes on to her daughter Sonja, the elder of her two children. We are introduced to life in the early 1900s in Scandinavia, the States and France, as Julia travels where she needs to in order to ensure a secure life for herself and children. We see in Julia traits of when women were starting to become more defined and assertive in society, and beginning to break away from the need for dependence on marriage to achieve standing and security. When we take up Sonja's story it takes in the Depression, the Roaring Twenties and it becomes apparent she has inherited her mother's independence.

Susanne has a pleasant, extremely readable style, but the richness of her descriptions transport you easily into the European countries and American cities visited by Julia and her daughter; you can almost taste the coffee and croissants and hear the characteristic French accordion music of the Parisian cafes.

This is a lovely, enjoyable and Jane Austen-esque book, you will not be disappointed.

This book exceeded my expectations. I wasn't sure that a fictionalised account of the author's ancestors wouldn't be a little too close to be truly comfortable, I guess. Read more
