About the Author

Millions of people around the world spend a few moments in quiet reflection with Karen Casey every day. Karen is the best-selling author of Each Day a New Beginning, the first daily meditation book written expressly for women in recovery from addiction. Published in 1981, Each Day a New Beginning has sold more than three million copies and has been translated into ten different languages. Over the years, readers around the world have come to regard Karen as a trusted companion on the recovery journey. Among her other best-selling inspirational books are Keepers of the Wisdom, A Woman's Spirit, Fearless Relationships, and A Life of My Own. In her newest book, Serenity (Hazelden, 2007), Karen shares favorite passages that gently convey simple lessons for living with greater peace, hope, and trust.

Karen enjoys golfing and riding her Harley with her husband. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Naples, Florida.

More About the Author

I was born in Lafayette, IN and moved to Minneapolis, MN in 1964. I taught elementary school for a few years and then pursued a graduate degree at the University of MN. I graduated with a Ph.D. in 1979. I published my first book, EACH DAY A NEW BEGINNING: DAILY MEDITATIONS FOR WOMEN with Hazelden Publishing in 1982. It has been followed by the publication of 21 other books, the most recent of which is CULTIVATING HOPE. In early summer of this year (2010), Conari will be publishing the 23rd book: LET GO NOW: EMBRACING DETACHMENT. See www.womens-spirituality.com for a complete listing and description and for a link to my blog. My focus as a writer is on the development of spiritual growth and strengthening one's twelve step recovery, and my personal experience is what I rely on, coupled with the wisdom I glean from the many people I walk among in the rooms of AA and Al-Anon. When I am not in front of the computer writing, I am likely giving a lecture or doing a workshop some where. I have spoken to tens of thousands world-wide over my thirty-five year tenure in recovery rooms. From each experience my gratitude grows. And from each experience, my commitment grows to continue doing what brings my life such joy.

As a woman in recovery, I find many of the things in the Big Book and 24 Hours a Day just don't speak to me. After all, and it took me many years to believe this, we are different from men. An issue I struggle with is surrender and turning power over to a Higher Power. We are taught at such an early age to play second fiddle, that in recovery I feel I need slightly reinterpreted advice. Too often we let ourselves be doormats. This book gives me strength and hope without that feeling of being used. It talks about boundary setting and the beauty of letting things slide sometimes--there are cases where the best action is inaction. Anyway, I read the meditations from this book every day and usually, something resonates with me. I highly recommend it and will be getting copies for my sponsees.

This is the best meditation book for recovering women. I was given this book by my sponser on the anniversary of 3 months sober. And here over five years later I read it every day. I also have purchased a copy for every woman close to me in the program. You won't be disappointed.

Out of all the mediatation material I have used I find this is the most focused on taking care of the inner child in me. That child caused me to run in fear and procrastinate on taking care of what I need to do for me. This mediatation guide has empowered me to take better care of me on a daily basis. This is very wonderful. I ordered several to give as gifts.

I gave this as a gift to a friend who was delighted. Each day's reading starts with a quotation, then comes a short daily reading that is beautifully written. At the end there is a meditative thought - or prayer - that sums up the reading for the day.

The book is a small format, perfect to keep on a bedside table, or in a morning meditation basket, or in your purse. Makes a thoughtful gift for a friend in recovery.
