Hacker handbooks, built on innovation and on a keen understanding of the challenges facing student writers, are the most widely adopted in America. Other Hacker handbooks, all published by Bedford/St. Martin's, include The Bedford Handbook, Eighth Edition (2010); Rules for Writers, Sixth Edition (2008); and A Pocket Style Manual, Fifth Edition (2008).

NANCY SOMMERS, who has taught composition and directed composition programs for thirty years, now teaches writing in the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University. A two-time Braddock Award winner, Sommers is well-known for her research and publications on student writing. Her recent work involves a longitudinal study of undergraduate writing. I had to buy this book for my English class this year, and when I first bought it I only thought about how much I could sell it for when the years over. Now that I've read some of it I am NEVER selling it. This book is a bible for anything writing related. It has everything from the absolute have-to-haves like MLA format, to how to make your paper just overall sound better. I'll definitely use this book for the rest of my college experience.

The book itself has a lot of information and is organized in an easy-to-find manner. I bought this for an English 101 class and honestly I didn't need to use it that much besides for MLA style essay papers. I'm keeping it in case I need to use it later when I continue my education to get a Bachelor's Degree.

This is the book you need to help you become a good writer. If you struggle with the subject of English get this book to keep as a reference.

First book that I have purchased that actually helps with grammar, apa format and making that paper look polished. This book even helps you set up your word processor to get the format right

I purchased this book last quarter for an english class that didn't use this book though required. I will be using the book this quarter for another english class. The area's I have used and read which are few seem very helpful in gaining the needed techniques for furthering writing.

The book is useful but unnecessarily expensive. You can find most of this info on the internet for free, and the only reason it sells as well as it does is because it is required by many college instructors. The 7th edition features new rules to various topics, like Works Cited Pages. They haven't been changed in years, but apparently now italicizing is IN and underlining is OUT. What a waste.

I haven't been in school since high school, I'm 28 years old, so I'm rusty on my academics. As a new college student, it requires you to perform an immense amount of writing. This book breaks down how to figure out your ideas and actively apply them to the specific subject. It also helps when referencing quotes or lines and with the bibliography. Would recommend this to anyone college or not to enhance writing skills.
