Book Description

August 1, 2006
In 1946 Worcester Diner #790 arrived by truck and was installed at 3 Bridge Street in Gardiner, Maine. Under the name of Heald's Diner, it served employees of Gardiner's mills and factories with an emphasis on ample portions served quickly. The diner is still at 3 Bridge Street, still a marvel of efficiency and art moderne design, still a local gathering place, still serving the same warm, flaky biscuits. But under the ownership of Mike Giberson and Neil Anderson since 1988, the little A1 Diner (as it is now known) draws customers (and restaurant reviews) from far and wide with its wonderfully eclectic menu (you can order Bouillabaisse or meatloaf), its emphasis on fresh, local food, and its upscale deli and specialty food store next door, A1 To Go. This is a small business success story, filled with characters from either side of the counter, packed with recipes and kitchen notes, enjoyable down to the last bite.

From the Back Cover

"This is an A1 book! It captures the food, the people, the history, and what has made this Worcester streamliner click for sixty years. Read this for the anecdotes, but keep it for the recipes".
-Richard J.S. Gutman, author 'American Diner Then and Now' and 'The Worcester Lunch Car Company'

"No journey through Central Maine would be quite right without a stop at A1 Diner. At the A1, Mike and Neil have not only preserved the traditions fo the Great American Diner - they have subtly moved it forward with new twists on old favorites. 'A1 DIner: Real Food, Recipes, and Recollections' gives us great, simple recipes as well as stories of the traditions that have made the diner part of what is quintessential Maine."
Clark Frasier and Mark Gaier, chefs/owners, Arrows Restaurant and MC Perkins Cove

"In our travels across the country we have eaten in some of the best restaurants, but when we yearn for a taste of New England, we seek out diners like the A1. At A1 Diner you'll be comforted with delicious and homey dishes like New England Boiled Dinner, and surprised by unique updates to classics like Spiced Brisket with Polenta. If you love diners and you love great cooking, this book is for you."
-Jonathan King and Jim Stott, founders of Stonewall Kitchen

More About the Author

I grew up in California and didn't know about diners until I moved to New England. A friend took me to A1 Diner in Gardiner, Maine, and I was fascinated by both the beautiful space and the diner's history.

The 60-plus-year history of the diner mirrors the recent history of the town: from boom to bust and back. Maurice Wakefield, who owned the diner for almost three decades, was still alive when I wrote the book, and was delighted to share his recipes and anecdotes. It was an honor to tell his story.

A lot has changed over the years, but a lot has remained the same. The strong work ethic, the respect for the customer, and the focus on fresh food prepared properly are all part of both the diner's heritage and its present. Maurice told me that during smelt season (wintertime--they're caught through the ice!) people would show up at the diner with buckets of smelt and he would cook and serve them. I thought that was a lovely old-fashioned story. Then Mike told me they still do that!

A1 Diner is my first book. I have been a professional writer for over 30 years, but until recently I only did business writing. My first job was at the computer trade publication Datamation, and I then worked in corporate communications for several firms, including a national security-oriented systems engineering firm and several software companies. I still do freelance business writing--details and examples at sarahrolph.com.

This review is from: A1 Diner: Real Food, Recipes, and Recollections (Paperback)
This book has lots of local color as well as great recipies. We have tried many of the Maine favorites and shared with others. Having frequented the diner is the way my interest was peaked. It's a great place for breakfast and lunch in Gardiner, ME.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent cookbook of authentic diner delicacies, September 8, 2006
This review is from: A1 Diner: Real Food, Recipes, and Recollections (Paperback)
A1 Diner: Real Food, Recipes, & Recollections isn't just a straightforward cookbook; it gathers memories of the people who owned and worked for the A1 Diner, from which these time-tested favorite tastes have been gathered. Numerous anecdotes and recollections pepper such long-beloved A1 Diner recipes as Individual Cheese Souffles, Gingerbread with Lemon Sauce, Mike's Shrimp Scampi, Lime Avocado Salad with Pistachios, and a great deal more. A handful of black-and-white photographs illustrate this excellent cookbook of authentic diner delicacies.
