I read multiple negative reviews on multiple sites but figured i'd give it a try. I have a Fluval 206 canister filter and put this in tray 2 (the middle one). I tested my water for nitrates about an hour later and my 20 gallon tropical aquarium went from 1.5 ppm to 0. It has held steady there for over a month. Amazon's pricing is only a fraction of what big chain stores sell this for. I will continue to use this product in the future.

I was having trouble keeping the nitrates in my 10 gallon aquarium in check. I have 2 small shubunkin goldfish(about 2" in length). I would have readings of about 40 ppm so I would do a water change of about 25% to get it to a more tolerable level for my fish, bringing the nitrate level down to about 10-20 ppm(It's kind of hard to see the difference between the 2 color levels, I have a API master test kit). Saw this at the store and decided to give it a try. The product does come with a media bag which the container doesn't state. The directions are pretty simple: 1.Fill the bag with the media(which are small tan granuals similar to sand) 2.Rinse with cold tap water 3.Place bag into filter at last stage of filtration. That last step is where I ran into some trouble. I have a cheap $30 starter kit from Walmart which came with a small Aqua-Tech 5 to 15 gallon filter which has no extra room inside of it for the media bag.I decided to rig it up in front of the filter output water flow area using a rubber band to hold it in place against the filter. It doesn't look pretty but it got the job done. Once that was all set up I waited 4 hours and decided to test the water again to see if anything happened since the container stated that it works in a few hours. I was a little sceptical about the product but to my absolute surprise I now had a reading of 0 ppm! I hoped that it would remove some of the nitrates and/or keep the level stable but it removed it all. It's still the first night of my using the product but I was so impressed I thought I'd write a review. It states that it may be used multiple times and is rechargable by rinsing with water then allowing it to soak in water mixed with non iodized aquarium salt for 24 to 48 hours. That being said I don't know how long it will last or how good it will work after being recharged. It is not a cheap product so if it really does work multiple times that would be a huge plus. I'll try to post an update in a few weeks to let you all know.

I've been looking for a cost effective nitrate-selective exchange resin to reduce the frequency of water changes. My normal schedule is a 25% water change every week for a 55 gal tank. My goal is a 10% water change per week.

I tested the resin at the end of a week (before water change) - ~40ppm nitrate (according to API's test kit). A 25% water change reduces the nitrate to ~30ppm.

My first attempt was to suspend the resin near the air stone in two 10 inch long fine nylon mesh bags. After 24hrs, still ~40ppm.

I then placed the bagged resin in the last stage of my Fluval 306 canister for ~8hrs. Nitrates measured ~20ppm, excellent.

Regeneration is reasonable - 2oz of kosher salt in distilled/RO water for 24hrs. The resin will last longer if you limit exposure to tank water (avoid nitrifying bacteria and waste from coating the resin).

My only complaint is the size of the resin - smaller than a grain of sand. Only very fine mesh bags will contain it.

ive had this product a few months now, i purchased multiple cans to use in several tanks. it works GREAT the first time, so if your having a serious nitrate problem i do recommend it to get the nitrates down or even gone quick. HOWEVER it works for a shorter period of time with each regeneration it seems. so if youre wanting this to reduce your regular maintenance its not really worth it. sooner than you know youll just be back to more frequent water changes again... might be a good idea to use a new one in your tank if you go on vacation or something like that as a way to keep it extra clean for longer one time. the next time i soak it in the salt solution to regenerate im going to take it out of the mesh bag and see if it gets cleaned any better. but i dont think ill buy it again. maybe if i planned for a long vacation and didnt want the sitter to have to do water changes id buy one just to have on hand for that purpose. my next venture is to give seachem purigen a try.

I have been having problems with nitrates in my 10 gallon planted tank that is over run by endlers.

I did a 40% water change and the reading was STILL over 200! I added extra plants, even anacharis. I have shrimp in the tank so any water change larger than that and they would all die (even 40% is risky with shrimp).

I added 1/2 of the container and cranked the filer up (to speed the water contact with the medium) and within 3 hours the nitrogen in my tank is down to 40.

My fish are much happier.

it came MUCH faster then expected date (they estimated a week even though i have prime) very very very happy
