First impression of this laptop is the body design. The laptop is pretty thin for a 15.6" and feels a bit lighter than my Dell XPS M1530. Screen frame has a glassy look while the main body has the carbon fiber look and feel. Picture quality is very clear with the intel HD graphic chip. Keyboard feels plastic, but comfortable enough to type on. All of the laptop's optional functions (sound, wireless, brightness) are located on the F keys. So you can't adjust anything on the laptop until it's loaded Windows. The touch pad area has plenty of room to navigate. The major flaw of the design is where the speakers are located. It's pretty ridiculous how the speakers are located at the bottom front of the laptop facing downward. Pretty much the bottom front of the laptop slants inward, so the speakers are slanted toward the bottom away from the user. Whoever designed the speakers has no brain at all. This design makes the speakers sound very terrible because the sound waves are bounced back to u from the desk.
As far as the system goes. The intel HD graphic chip has 1696MB (around 1.7gb) of shared memory, definitely enough to run some of the medium range games. I have not tested it out with games yet, but from personal experience, it should be sufficient. I will update this later after I test it out.
The laptop is also equipped with a lot of softwares. some are useful, some aren't, especially the trial ones. I recommend uninstall the trial versions after they expire. Everything else is pretty standard with Windows 7.
For normal use, laptop battery lasts roughly 3 hours. Does not generate a lot of heat so the laptop feels pretty cool most of the time unless you run some intensive programs like games.
This is definitely cheap for a i5 2.63ghz 6gb ram 640gb hdd. I've done a lot of comparing between brands before I finally settled down on Asus. HP dv6-3250us would've been my second choice had this laptop not been this cheap. If you don't care about the sound too much. Then I'd recommend this one. but whatever laptop u get, always make sure you buy a 3 year warranty from squaretrade. It's worth the money in the long run, and you can get $30 off with coupon code "TAX" if u buy the warranty on squaretrade's website instead of amazon.
*update* Tested with a few games like StartCraft 2 and Team Fortress 2, both games run smoothly and does not seem to have any overheating problems. I'm very impressed.

I've used ASUS motherboards for years in my desktops so when my HP Pavilion died I began shopping for a better line (as most HPs seen to have temp issues). For the price this machine is a still. The dual i5 core is FAST and with 6G of RAM it cruises easily through most processes. The only drawbacks were the ridiculous amount of bloat-ware that had to be uninstalled and the touch pad. There are several Gigs of bloat-ware that will take you considerable time to remove. The good news however is that it all removes easily and does NOT interfere with Windows stability (i.e. you won't have to reinstall a clean version of Win7 on your new laptop, not something that can be said for most computers and laptops). After removing all the bloat the machine boots FAST (to the login screen in a few seconds and to full, ready to use status in less than a min). Though on the note of configuration ASUS is apparently using an older OEM version of Win7 so you will d/l a TON of Win updates including the newer service pack.
The other glaring issue, at least for me, is the touch pad. While it's not overly sensitive to palm presses (i.e. you generally don't select and delete text while you type) it is has a fairly inconsistent feel to it and selecting text and other basic functions seems to take a lot more work than it should. If this issues is addressed (software update) than I will easily and gladly rate this at 5 stars.
Also not the battery life isn't nearly as long as they advertise (not that it is for any manufacturer). I can get a good 3 hours out of it with light work (office apps, browsing ect.) but if you're doing anything major plan on being plugged in or picking up a spare battery. On that note I wish ASUS would make some extended batteries like HP and Toshiba that would lift the back of the unit up. Heat is NOT a concern with this laptop (runs cooler at full load than an HP and idle) but the elevation makes typing from/on a desk much more comfortable.

Bought it to replace an HP mini-laptop with a slow processor. I was tired of programs taking forever to run and wanted something fast. The i-5 processor is excellent, runs security programs in a flash compared to my old laptop ... a program that used to take 20 minutes takes 2 minutes.
It was easy to get the computer set up compared to my last one. There is some crapware installed on it, but not nearly as much as on an HP. There are a bunch of little entertainment programs from a company called Oberon, and then there is a pretty large security program to uninstall, but that is true of every computer these days. At least the security program on this computer was easy to uninstall compared to MacAfee.
There were a total of 25 updates necessary for Windows 7, about 100mb worth, that took a little while but it went smoothly. No problems with booting the computer at any time. It boots real fast, my last computer had Windows Vista and combined with a weak processor we're talking a 15 minute boot, this one takes less than a minute.
As far as the speakers go, I don't use the speakers on laptops so no idea if they are good or bad.

A great laptop
It's a great laptop. My only major complaint is the odd speaker location on the front/bottom side of the keyboard. An easy fix by buying real speakers.
