5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DIY system., January 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: AAS 300 Wireless Home Security Alarm System Pet Immune DIY(R) (Electronics)
I was a little hesitant to purchase this system, but I wanted a home alarm system. I really wanted the "peace of mind" everyone wants when away from home.

When I was reading reviews on Amazon for similar system packages they said the directions were hard to understand, etc. The instruction booklet that came with the system is EXTREMELY easy to understand. I am going to assume they have rewritten it since some people have left reviews. I had the key fobs, wireless siren, 2 motion detectors, and all sensors programmed and functional within 15-20 minutes of pulling it out of the package. Regardless what others have said about programming this unit, it was extremely easy and you don't have to be a genius to figure it out. You type in some numbers in the panel alarm unit, then use the part you are programming, whether its hitting the button on the side of wireless siren, put the magnet next to the sensor then moving it away, moving the motion detector around, or pressing the panic button on the key fob. The instructions are simple, but very easy.

The only flaw I think this system has is the sticky backs on all of the equipment (besides the motion detectors, and alarm panel - those get mounted by screws on the wall [screws/nails not included for mounting]) I definitely think the sticky backs are a great idea and are strong, but I did have one fall off my door in the middle of the night and my alarm went off as I had it set to "home" mode. Since then I have replaced all [3] door sensors with "Velcro Industrial Strength Sticky-Back Hook & Loop Fasteners" and it is holding very well. I had planned on changing all the backs to a Velcro material because of the ease of removing it later to replace the batteries when needed. I'm going to leave the sticky backs on all of the window sensors, since those are laying flat. Like I said the sticky backs are GOOD quality, they just didn't mount to an older style wood panel type door very well, it could have been my fault anyways. I would definitely recommend spending a few extra dollars on the Velcro stickies on the sensors you put on your front / back / shed / or garage door, etc.

The sensor I have on the man-door of my garage is about 80 feet from the unit in the house and the signal from that wireless sensor is excellent. I didn't have any non-working parts out of the package, and it has been a week and everything is still working great. If I run into any problems I will definitely add to my review in the future.

As far as the motion detectors go I left my doors unlocked and self-tested to see how fast the infrared sensors will detect you and it was immediate after opening the door. On the front door I have the sensor mounted about 20-25 feet away from the door near the ceiling. My other sensor to my back door goes off immediately as well, but it is closer to the door than my motion detector in the living room. [I do not have any pets at this time, so I'm sorry, but I cannot comment as to if small pets set off the motion detectors or not at this time. If/when I get someone to bring a pet over to test it I will update the review. I have read in other reviews that a person had 2 cats and 2 small dogs and they did not set off the detectors, but I do not know from personal experience for now.]

The sirens are deafening. I have the wireless siren in my bedroom on one side of the house and the unit mounted on the other side of the house. It is loud! I can hear it outside of my house, but if my neighbors were inside of their home with their windows closed I doubt they could hear it. If you are standing outside you can hear the alarm going off. I think the best thing to do here is do what I did then maybe add another siren later outside (you can order as much equipment that you want from AAS, they send you a pamphlet explaining the website, and where to order more components if you wish to do so).

The key fobs are wonderful. I love them. I can arm/disarm/set to home while outside of the house, or even hit the panic button. I haven't actually checked the distance on the key fobs though, but I have never had any issues using any of them so far. I would imagine they would work as it says, up to 450 feet away, but I cannot confirm this.

When the alarm does go off I immediately get a phone call from the alarm system, and then I have it set to call a cousin that lives a couple blocks away and the auto-dialer works very well and fast. I feel that even if a burglar broke into the house, found the unit, and destroyed it you already know someone broke into your house. I am using a VoIP phone system and it works well. I suppose if your power would go out then you would not receive the phone call, but I'm willing to take that risk for now. I would recommend that "anyone" should use a regular land-line, but its cheaper to use VoIP [Voice over IP; ie: MagicJack, Ooma, Vonage, etc. that is plugged into your internet. I'm not here to write a review or recommendation about VoIP. :) ].

Note: I would like to point out that almost everywhere in the country [United States] it is ILLEGAL to have an auto-dialer dial your local police department, or 911. Do NOT do this unless you have confirmed it with your local 911 communications center. Also note that most cities/villages require a permit for you to use a home alarm system. I live in Columbus, Ohio and they require a permit fee of $25 for every two years for a residential home alarm regardless if it is professionally monitored. You are better safe than sorry. Lets say your alarm goes off and you aren't home and you call 911 and the police show up and it went off and there was nothing stolen or intrusion suspected. You will get charged a fine for not having a permit (in Columbus it is $100 each violation, misdemeanor charge). Just a heads up, do some research for where you live before you install and start using it! Call your local permit/licensing office first! It's better to be informed than not informed.

Conclusion:
This is a cheap solution to a do-it-yourself home alarm system, and works very well. Some of the components (specifically the motion detectors) seem cheap, but they work very well. I can't complain, you get what you pay for. I would highly recommend this to someone who wants that peace of mind when you are away from home.

If you have any questions I'll try to reply back asap. If I find any flaws I'll definitely post them, but I am happy so far!

5.0 out of 5 stars Its works very well., January 31, 2011

I had the misfortune of having my home robbed this month. I used to have a alarm system from a monitoring company. It quit working and they kept a very high price with a self renewing contract which did not help me very much. I got out of that and left my house unprotected for many years. Before I ordered this alarm I called many alarm companies in my area and they all wanted multiyear contracts and very basic installs. I did some looking and found this system. I have 2 small dogs and cats so I got the pet friendly system. it works very well I I had it fully running about 2 hrs after I had it out of the box.
Over all it was a very good deal with a great price and It calls my cell number since I am close to home from work.

I bought this alarm from AAS Alarms and am very happy with it. There were a couple of problems at first, but unlike some other peoples' comments, I found AAS very helpful in resolving them. Even when I had to leave a voice mail, the called back quickly. They did everything they promised and quickly as well.

First, the problem. I couldn't get the remote wireless siren to work no matter what I did. AAS sent a second siren out, but that didn't resolve the issue. After a couple of phone calls back and forth I ended up sending the keypad/controller back and they replaced it by Priority Mail. After that, everything worked fine.

Set up is pretty straightforward, although the wording of some of the manual items is a bit odd. Some of the early reviews said that the manual was useless, but this is clearly a revised manual and is much better than what the other reviewers described. In addition, AAS has how to videos at their site to help with questions.

Setting up the motion detectors and window sensors was a snap, as was getting the wireless siren initialization once I had a good key pad. Coverage of the wireless sensors is very good, I found no need to extend any of the antennas on the sensors. Speaking of which, that is the only negative thing I have to say about the sensors. They used metal extendable antennas and I think that rubber duckie style antennas would be better, if an external antenna is needed at all.

Installing all of the sensors was easy. Another reviewer recommended using velcro instead of the double sided tape and once I had the system in my hands I understood why. It will be much easier to replace the 123 batteries by taking the sensor off the window or door where it is mounted than trying to remove it from it's base plate.

There is a lot of programming flexibility in this system, much more than their brief description says. For example there are options for smoke detectors, a dialer, a GSM cell phone interface, Carbon Monoxide detectors, and glass break detectors.

Overall, I think that this is a very good system for the price and installation is easy because there are no wires to run as the old alarm systems had.

This does exactly what it says. The pet immune motion detector does fine with my 40 lb dog, even though she gets on the couch. Sirens are loud, auto-dialer calls us, key fobs are extremely convenient, etc. No surprises + right price + peace of mind = 5 stars. AND it only took my husband 2 hours to install everything, he did use a hot glue gun for the door sensors based on another review, but ran into no problems otherwise. We are very satisfied.
