The 4 star rating is because I'm an ABBA fan, why it's not a 5 star rating is because you get nothing "majorly" new here. The track listing is exactly the same as in "The Definitive Collection", except for two videos. Supposedly, the videos will be remastered and reformatted to 16:9 picture (rumoured). I think the picture and 4:3 format in "The Definitive Collection" is just fine with me, as that's how the videos were shot anyway. Now, the two videos that got replaced from "The Definitive Collection" were "When I Kissed The Teacher" (a must have video for me as I love the song and video) and "Dancing Queen" (at the Royal Swedish Opera). The two videos that replaced them here are spanish versions of "Knowing Me, Knowing You" (Conociéndome, Conociéndote) and "Thank You For The Music" (Gracias Por La Música). So there you have it, these are the differences between "The Definitive Collection" and "The Essential Collection". If you don't have either one and is deciding, I'd get "The Definitive Collection" as you're getting an actual extra song and video with "When I Kissed The Teacher" and a live performance of "Dancing Queen". So you're really getting nothing new here, instead, you lose two videos just to be replaced with spanish videos.

I'm an ABBA collector and felt I needed to get this to keep my collection up-to-date. Its inevitable this DVD will be compared to other greatest video hit ABBA DVD's that include "ABBA: The Definitive Collection" and "ABBA: Number One's". They all offer different things to varying degrees and I will try to make some comments I hope will help those trying to decide amongst them. If you are a collector of course like me you want them all. Having said that I find this most recent collection "ABBA: The Essential Collection" a little to moderately disappointing. If you could combine all three DVD's with all the best of each you could even release another collection called the "ABBA: Ultimate Directors Cut Collection" or some such thing but doubt that will ever happen. With this being a review of the "Essential Collection" I will focus most on that and comment on the others at the end. "Essential Collection": the sound was unbelievable and easily the best of the three DVD's. I really feel they took care to make the sound top notch. It just booms and is crystal clear, just awesome. The videos now sport a zoomed-in effect as the videos are 16:9 as opposed to the original 4:3 perspective which was the norm back in the 70's & early 80's when these videos were made by them. I have seen this new view in the "Number One's" collection and liked it alot. However, this perspective doesn't suit all the videos. Some look good this way and others look quite bad in my opinion. If you could watch both versions side-by-side you will know what I mean. I was mostly interested in the videos that weren't in "Number One's" that are in "Essential". Some were outstanding and others didn't do ABBA justice.Read more ›

Bought most of ABBA's albums\tapes in the 70's. Just started to collect their dvds and this is the first one I bought. FWIW since buying Essential I have also purchased ABBA Deluxe, ABBA In Concert 1979, and have ABBA in Japan on order. Having these videos and the old TV performances is great as they were very hard to see here in the US in the 70's.

Others have detailed what is included on the dvd so I won't be doing that. I did give 5 stars because the sound is very good, most of the videos themselves are of high quality, and unlike others posting reviews all of the content is new to me. The only disappointing video is "I do, I do, I do, I do, I do" sounds great, like the rest of the music but picture quality is poor(blurry) on my hd tv and is the only video I tend to never watch. Most of the rest come across as vibrant and colorful approaching hd. Then there are a couple that while not hd quality are certainly more than acceptable.

I figured I'd never watch the Spanish language bonus tracks but I was wrong. I love "Conociéndome, Conociéndote (Knowing Me, Knowing You)" and really enjoy the other four Spanish tracks(Estoy Sonando (I Have A Dream), Gracias Por La Música (Thank You For The Music), Felicidad (Happy New Year), No Hay A Quien Culpar (When All Is Said And Done) ) and watch them often. As a fan from the 70's I was always amazed at how they sang in English and, if you hadn't been told, you had no clue they were from Sweden. Hearing them in Spanish just as impressive. It shows just how professional they were and their attention to detail.

If, like me, you are just starting to collect the ABBA dvds this is a good place to start.
