Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The Jackson brothers' second album is more solid than you might expect from even the great singles act that they already were. In addition to radio classics (the title track, "The Love You Save," and "I Found That Girl"), the quintet and their production team apply themselves to fine versions of other Motown stars' hits and a tough version of Funkadelic's funny psychedelic-soul nugget "I'll Bet You." The preteen Michael emotes more than credibly on the likes of Stevie Wonder's "Don't Know Why I Love You" and Smokey's "(Come 'Round Here) I'm the One You Need." Like Eric B. and Rakim did later, he might have declared "I ain't no joke," but his performances here did it for him. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best!, December 1, 1999
By Jeffrey Harris (South San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After all these years, this is still one of my favorite albums. Besides the hits theres' several great album tracks, including "2-4-6-8", "I'll Bet You", "I Found That Girl"(the B-side of "The Love You Save" for those who didn't know)and a amazing cover of "La La Means I Love You". I'm proud to say that this was the first album I ever owned. The first five albums the Jackson 5 released are all great, but this one will always be #1 in my book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound Of Young America, November 10, 2000
The Jackson Five were the last of the great Motown acts from the label's halcyon days. Their first release showed they had talent, but ABC confirmed that these Indiana kids were something special. Combining the group's perfect vocals, The Corporation's supreme production and a stellar list of songs, ABC is an R&B gem. The album contains two number one singles, the title cut and "The Love You Save", and they are only the tip of the iceberg. What made Michael so impressive of a vocalist at the tender age of 12 is that he could interpret songs and convey feelings that someone of his age probably have never felt. On "One More Chance" he pleads for a chance at redemption, in Stevie Wonder's "Never Had A Dream Come True" he sings of failure and missed chances, in the plaintive "Don't Know Why I Love You" he sings of blind devotion and he expresses the joys of pure and unrequited love in "True Love Can Be Beautiful". "I'll Bet You" has a Sly Stone funkified soul sound and sounds like nothing else the band has done and they do a good job on the Delfonics' "La La (Means I Love You)". Jermaine takes over the lead vocal duties on "I Found That Girl". Even though they could sing about more mature themes, they were still just basically teenagers and they show that on the nursery rhyme like "2-4-6-8" and the declaration of their youth in "The Young Folks". Motown proclaimed that they were the "Sound of Young America" and this was never truer than with the J5 and ABC is the pinnacle of the band's career with the label.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best!, November 24, 1999
By Rosaland Harris (Greensboro,North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This album is the finest of its genre. I still get goosebumps listening to Michael, Jermaine and the rest of his brothers harmonize. Still in its true form, the songs ABC and The Love you Save sounds timeless as its debut in 1970. Also check out "I'll bet you", "2 4 6 8" and "La La means I love you". Believe me, it is a must-have CD on anyone's list! Buy this album!
