Lack of equality/diversity, April 18, 2008
This review is from: ABC of Jobs (Board book)
My preschool ordered this book and I was shocked at the preponderance of white males in a book published in 2003! Other than showing a female doctor, police officer, and executive, this book caters to job stereotypes of the 1950s. White males represent 15 of the 26 workers shown (there's one black male), and women represent only 10 of the 26 jobs. Since 26 divides evenly, how hard would it have been to show 13 women? And the jobs the men have are "traditional" male jobs: airplane pilot, builder, firefighter, helicopter pilot, jockey, mechanic, quarterback, racing driver, scuba diver, welder, and U.S. Coast Guard. Women are: executive, illustrator, karate instructor, nurse, teacher, vet, xylophonist and yoga teacher. I hate these types of books, books that subconsciously get into kids' minds, re-emphasizing old stereotypes. I would not recommend this book.
