Grade 1-4--"Add," "borrow," "count," and "divide" are the first of the 26 math terms introduced through 6- to 10-line riddles that usually rhyme. ("B is my beginning and W is my end./Useful in subtracting,/I'm the opposite of lend.") Occasionally the selections are forced such as "hexagon" for X and "ruler" for U. ("There's a U in my name./Four more letters belong.") Each entry includes blanks indicating the number of letters in the answer, showing the initial letter and sometimes the last one. Simple, colorful illustrations on uncluttered backgrounds also provide clues to the answers, which are included at the end, along with some suggestions to help parents and teachers extend the riddles. More About the Author

When sitting on the front porch of our cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina things come to me. And when listening to emerging talkers, especially when my own precious grandchildren, express thoughts to me, like, "Nana, this bug is 'gis-dusting'", yet other things come to me. Being a wife, mother of two, grandmother of four, teacher, traveler, reader, hiker, and picture book author, I count myself blessed.

I am particularly proud of ABC Math Riddles, published by Peel Productions, because it won the IRA's Children's Choice Award in 2004, an honor bestowed by fourth graders themselves across America. What higher honor could a writer receive?! I love writing and I love math, so it shoud be no surprise that my first venture into writing for children resulted in four math storybooks: the Adding Annie series, published by Price/Stern/Sloan in 1986 (currently out-of-print but soon to be republished). Ah-h-h...publishing...

ABC Math Riddles by Jannelle Martin is a challenging ABC book that quizzes young readers with a riddle rhyme to guess a word for each letter of the alphabet. Fun to read, embellished with inviting color illustrations by Freddie Levin, and featuring captivating brain-teasers that make readers of all ages pause to think a little. v _ _ _ _ _ _ l: I start with a V, there's an L at the end./I'm straight up and down and I never bend./Like a skyscraper high,/I point to the sky./Power poles point up like me./What, oh what, can I be?
