Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-All of these animal babies are extremely cuddly and appear in a full-color photo, one to a page, with the uppercase letter, a one- or two-line descriptive phrase, and a small image showing its basic shape. Some of the animals are shown with parents, some are held by what appears to be zoo staff, and some are on their own. A spread at the end of the book gives the conservation status of each one, its species, a short description, and the location of the zoo in which it resides. The introduction explains that the book's purpose is to teach the alphabet, but, more importantly, to show the need to study animals in zoos in order to understand them in the wild and to develop ways to protect endangered species. Not all of the animals are endangered, as explained on the back pages. Aside from the cuteness factor, and the simple ABC format, the book's usefulness is limited. It is mostly a browsing item for parents to share with young children. The photographs are wonderful, the color and simple phrases fun, but there is little actual information that would point children toward conservation facts.-Susan Lissim, Dwight School, New York Cityα(c) Copyright 2011. Review

“If looking for cuteness, pick this one.”

Kirkus Reviews, June 1, 2012

“Bleiman and Eastland introduce a new group of criminally cute baby zoo animals for each letter of the alphabet in a companion to 2010’s ZooBorns. Crisp, closeup photographs feature cheetahs, flamingos, marmosets, and sloths, among others, while lighthearted prose emphasizes the animals’ unique characteristics.”

Publishers Weekly, May 14, 2012

“All of these animal babies are extremely cuddly and appear in a full-color photo, one to a page…. The introduction explains that the book’s purpose is to teach the alphabet, but, more importantly, to show the need to study animals in zoos in order to understand them in the wild and to develop ways to protect endangered species…. The photographs are wonderful, the color and simple phrases fun.”

Get ready to ooh and aahh when you open up this beautifully photographed alphabet book! The photography will certainly bring a smile to your face as you go through the entire alphabet with pictures of animal babies to go with each letter. Some of the letter/animal combos are pretty standard, such as e and elephant, but some are a bit different, such as d and dhole. I've never heard of a dhole, but rest assured it's incredibly cute.

Each letter is large and well defined to aid in learning letter recognition. Each letter/animal combo is accompanied by a single line of text that is more whimsical than informational. The letter L features a lion cub nuzzling its mother, with the text stating "Soooo sleepy...eyes droopy...love my furry crash pad." P is for Panda of course, who says "Phew...I'm flat out pooped from playing with my panda pals." Tapirs have never looked so good, Sloths are sleepy, and the X-Ray Tetra's are swimming right along!

This is a must have for any young animal lover, and works as a fine book for learning letters. At the end of the book is a section entitled "Get to know the ZooBorns" that will give you important facts about each animal, and the challenges they are currently facing in the wild. Whether you are using this book to teach letters or just to admire some beautiful animals, this is a good choice for any child's personal collection.

I posted on Facebook that I was tempted to buy this book - but I'm 67 and thought I might be over the age limit. My niece suggested I buy the book and later donate it to a school or somewhere where children could enjoy it. I immediately ordered it. I haven't given it away yet but soon I plan to give it to a school. Then I can order another one and do it all over again. :)

This book is wonderful...the kind that brightens your day and makes you want to show other people. The photography is very good, the choice of animals is excellent, and even the text is cute. I liked it so much I bought half a dozen other Zooborn books.

I didn't know half these animals! My daughter is only 2 and knows basic animals and the animals in this book confuse her because she points to a dhole and says dog and she doesnt even know where to begin with the tapir. They're also babies so they don't look like the traditional animals young ones are used to seeing. It might be better if they're older and know their animals better.

This was a great addition to our ABC book unit. My Kinder class OOOed, AAAHed, and giggled about each picture. The info in the back was great for introducing an animal we didn't know about.
