I'll be the first to admit I'm not heavy in the rap/r&b genre (perhaps evidenced by having just lumped the two together). K'naan's ABC's, though, is one of those few songs that reaches out to the soul and defies its labels.With influences of the Fugees and Will-i-am, ABC's tackles some tough social issues with style and panache. K'naan's smart writing keeps the song well on the side of inspirational rather than preachy, and that is the joy of listening (akin to Neil Young's "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World"). I sincerely hope ABC's gets some radio play, because the world could use a little more good, meaningful music. |
