Astounding Allred,

This review is from: ABC's of Jazz (Audio CD)
This is a superb recording. Jeff Barnhart is a fine stride pianist, but it is clearly Allred who steals the show. His trombone playing is so stunningly fluent and inventive and swinging that words escape me here. For the sake of space, I will refer to two cuts. "Pick Yourself Up", which features a TORRID Allred improvisation, and Charlie Haden's "First Song", which literally has to be heard to be believed. I don't think I've ever heard a more moving ballad performance by ANY player on ANY instrument than John Allred on this tune. I will go further and say that this is , for my money, one the great, all-time jazz recordings EVER. It is THAT good. Absolutely sublime. I have listened to "First Song" at least twice a day for over two weeks now, and now consider it one of my favorite recorded performances by anyone. A breathtakingly beautiful tune and treatment by Allred. Do yourself a favor --- get this and experience great, timeless music.
