"We are not born knowing how to be parents." That in a nutshell, motivated the Wexler's to produce this up to date guide for parents to be, both eager and anxious. They cover every important question regarding diagnostic techniques and results, and pay special attention to the latest technology and parental issues. "Not all of these (technological) advances have been positive. They may raise more questions than answers." Parents can discuss their concerns with their doctors. But at least they're here in this very current book. The authors guide the reader through adoption, AFP, amniocentesis, chromosomes, CVS, ectopic pregnancy, fetal growth, infertility, Down syndrome, lab tests, miscarriage, ultrasound and even insurance in a thorough, non-judgemental discussion.

"One of the most painful and difficult times is when
the joy of being future parents is burst by the prospect of an abnormality." That is always a possibility, and the Wexler's deal with it sensitively but honestly. They include a Family Genetic Profile for parents to complete. It is easily removed for sharing with a doctor. A very caring, informative and modern look at issues facing all prospective parents!

If I were only interested in genetic testing and genetic defects, I would have given this book at least a four star. (Would have been a five if it had a better index!)

But I wanted information on birth defects, open and closed cord defects also. I thought this book was a little weak in that area. As an example, the book didn't contain any statistics about the nuchal fold translucency ultrasound and results, etc.

It's not FUN reading about negative aspects of pregnancy like this, but the authors did a good job in making it readable and informative.
