5.0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Guide--Especially For Kids, December 23, 2003
This review is from: ABCs of Surviving Divorce: Important Tips for Parents, Teens & Children (Paperback)
It's sad that there is need for a book like this. But, where there is marriage, there is often divorce. What's positive about this book is that it gives tips on how to lessen the emotional turmoil kids will experience while the family is splitting apart.

The book is written in three parts. One section for the parents on how they can help make the split easier on their children. One section for teenagers and what they should expect from a divorce. The final section is written and illustrated for children and covers the same ground on what to expect.

The author writes from a credible standpoint of having survived her own parents' divorce as a teenager. I liked the fact that she shared a bit about herself and the struggles she endured. That's something that a kid can relate to. Parents can also better understand the effects their actions can and do have.

The bottom line that Atchison wants the reader to understand is that despite the tragedy of divorce, if the parents handle it with dignity and compassion--as it involves the children--it allows for better healing in the long run. What kids can take away from this book is that it's okay to feel sad, it's okay to set boundaries and it's okay to seek help in dealing with feelings.

Overall, ABCs of Surviving Divorce is an excellent first book on a topic that is near and dear to the author's heart. Kudos to Atchison for having her work published.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABCs of Surviving Divorce, Important Tips ..., January 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: ABCs of Surviving Divorce: Important Tips for Parents, Teens & Children (Paperback)
In ABCs of Surviving Divorce, Important Tips for Parents, Teens, and Children, I believe Leah Atchison writes from a point of view that people can relate. Often times books of similar subject are written with 'scientific' jargon involving psycological terms and drawn out explanations. Divorce is a subject that more than half of our country is familiar with, and Atchison approaches it in a non-threatening manner. In her book, Atchison conveys healthful advice and information to not only the parents involved, but also the children. I recommend this book to anyone who may find themselves, or someone they know, in the unfortunate experience of divorce.
