they were smooth out of the box but the real benefits started about 500-600 miles as they just spin and spin, they took about 20 minutes to install with just a 5" bolt and a bunch of washers from the hardware store as a press, the tool it comes with is worthless though, the old bearings popped out pretty easy, no need to remove the cassette if you aren't changing that bearing, I would say it is a 3 out of 5 in hardness of changing, any handy guy can do it with the qrm tool and a couple of 5 mil allen wrenches, this is for the elites, I have a set of 2011 equips with the stock bearings and there is a huge difference between the wheel sets now
