About the Author
Author, teacher, and renowned mathematician Bob Miller has taught at virtually every educational level. Bob says: "In this book, I break down Accuplacer math and put it back together in step-by-step fashion. I teach Accuplacer math from the inside out so it sticks to your ribs. Welcome to my world of math. If you need help with math, I’ve got your number."

About the Author

For more than three decades, Bob Miller has brought his unique brand of teaching math to Rutgers, NYU Polytechnic, City University of New York, and Westfield State College. He is the author of the widely acclaimed “Clueless” series and has developed several math test preps for REA.

More About the Author

I love math. I taught math at CCNY for 35 years. I have 15 books published including my Precalc for the Clueless book which was awarded the best seller award by Amazon.com in its field in 1999. As Ms Jessica Bodford said about my Math for the GRE General Test, I try to very hard to make math enjoyable and learnable, trying to anticipate any question you might have. If you have a problem please write me. I would love to help. Most of the time I will be able. If not I can direct you. Please be patient. I sometimes do not look at my computer for a while.
Two future projects I would like to do- a book to teach parents and grand parents how to teach their kids math and HS text that will really teach you math and will help your teachers teach you math better and faster.
Former President Clinton said that there are 5,000,000 jobs in America that go unfilled. A knowledge of math will help qualify you for many (most?) of these high paying jobs.
I want to help you!!!!
Good luck to you now and in the future.
Bob Miller

After almost 20 years in the transportation industry, I decided to go back to school for a Bachelor's degree. I quickly ran into a problem- my my SAT test scores were old. I had a choice to take a non-credit "skill-building" course (math 099) or I could take the Accuplacer placement test. If I scored high enough, I could go directly into college level math saving me precious time and money. Since the Accuplacer at my college costs only $5, I opted for that. I knew I had to sharpen my math skills but I was in for a rude awakening when I received my college's study guide. It contained complicated algebra to include logarithms, imaginary numbers, quadratic equations, mind-boggling factoring, geometry, trigonometry, graphing, permutations, combinations, and the such. Huh? I took Geometry and Trig in high school but most of it I have forgotten.

The first time I took the Accuplacer, I used "Algebra Demystified" as a study guide; I was getting frustrated often. A home-schooling friend mentioned The Khan Academy, whose videos helped me quite a bit. I honestly couldn't believe that I would have to know the sort-of complicated math that was in the study guide, so after buffing up on Algebra only, I took my first Accuplacer test. I knew immediately after starting the exam that I was in trouble- f(x), imaginary numbers, factorials, I did not study ANY of this. I was actually surprised by my score of 61, which was NOT good enough to place me into the Statistics course which I needed for my degree. I needed 63 -70.

I found this book at B & N and started my 5 week summer cram session. I studied 2-3 hours each day (M-F). I did not even attempt to learn ALL of the concepts, only the ones which I could self-learn in this order.

As someone who has always struggled in math, I can honestly say this books saved me a lot of trouble. In high school, I took regular math courses. When I got to college however, I tested into remedial math. I got this book, studied it to the end, and was able to test into Precalculus! It's really helpful; everything is broken down into layman's terms. It starts from the very basics of math (elementary school level), and gradually progresses to calculus. Definitely worth the time and money.

I'm comparing this book to Cliffs notes Math review for standardized tests, and unfortunately Bob Miller's book doesn't compete.
Cliff notes goes into great detail on every practice question, leaving no room for error or confusion, while Bob Miller's book gave the answer with no explanation at all. I had to figure out many problems myself which is time consuming, discouraging - and exhausting!
He also skips around a lot. Cliff's notes reads smoothly and builds on each chapter using knowledge you just learned. In Bob's book there is no smoothness - it's not catagorized properly and I didn't have any small feat's of understanding that make it fun to learn - I was confused on every page.
It does however provide insight into the specific math questions asked on the acuplacer (that's why I'm giving it 2 stars). I'm going to finish reading Cliffs notes and then skim over Bob Miller's book for anything I missed.

And I really only did the first 4-5 chapters. If you do ALL of the chapters, you should place well into college level algebra and beyond. Just make sure that you write down and practice all of the facts he gives you at the beginning of the chapters; they are essential. Make sure you understand something before you move on too.

I la la la love this book. It's really easy to understand, especially for a person who dislikes math like me.
I took the test a second time and aced it with a really high score.
I would recommend this to anyone who needs to take the Accuplacer test for school.

The book definitely gives you a lot of problems to practice and a lot of tests to help you get better at math. The only problem I saw was that while it explains concepts somewhat, it also assumes that you remember details that really connect the steps you need to take to solve a problem. The book lacks those certain details and the extra explanations you might need for things you've just completely forgotten to do. All in all, it's a good book to help you practice for the test, but you do need a secondary book to help you with more detailed explanations.
