The console games were bad and the PSP version is worse. What we've got here is the same general "go anywhere, do anything" spirit of the console game, where you wander around a surprisingly barren city searching for your next mission. And those missions are generally either of the battle or drive-really-fast persuasion.
But it's in the details that Transformers PSP falls apart. First of all, the controls are awful. They're basically the classic first-person-shooter controls from the days of the PS1. Your face buttons act as your right analog stick. This makes exploration a pain and combat downright infuriating. Especially since the lock-on feature barely works at the best of times (another nod to the console iterations).
Visually the game is hurting, as well. The drab, empty locales are just the tip of the iceberg: The animation of these giant robots is just ugly. And the transformation animations in particular are hilarious -- these robots don't transform so much as snap into different forms. This is especially bad on the enemy robots, where they literally have no transformation animations whatsoever.
The one upside to the PSP version is the collection of classic G1 Transformers available to unlock and use in the multiplayer mode. What's better is that they've actually been woven into the story, effectively expanding this game beyond the movie's plot. Unfortunately, that means you have to play through this travesty to unlock them all. Plus the same combat and control issues plague the admittedly robust online mode.
The Transformers formula was meant for videogames. Giant robots destroying cities as the forces of good and evil struggle for supremacy. It's too bad the PSP developers weren't able to parlay that into a semidecent game.
