Editorial Reviews

Review

"Bev is as good as it gets.  She's smart, hardworking and a true craftsman - which is a bigger compliment than most people would think. I adore her as an actress and enthusiastically endorse her views in her Professional Guide to the Business of Acting." ~ Bobby Moresco, Academy Award Winning Writer/Director Crash, Million Dollar Baby"

There are hundreds of books out there on acting, perhaps only a few are noteworthy. Actor Muscle is in that select group. Beverly Leech has combined keen business acumen with the actor's craft to support an artist in putting their best foot forward. On top of that, Beverly is a working actor. She's been in the rooms that have demanded her best, you just can't get better advice! ~ Casey Kramer, Award Winning Actress, Transparent, Dexter, Behind the Candelabra, Southland, The Young & the Restless

Anyone interested in pursuing a career in acting could benefit from the detailed information she provides. Sharing her wealth of experience and knowledge, Leech is both encouraging and pragmatic." ~ Publishers Weekly

"As a working actor/teacher/director, I find this book extremely valuable, not only for the actor just starting out but also for professionals who want to stay on top of their game.  It's a conversational and informative skill set that every actor should read." ~ Richard Kline, Award Winner Actor and Director of Stage, Television and Film

Beverly Leech opens up a new world for struggling actors trying to break into the industry. I have read this book cover to cover TWICE. I've learned more from this most knowledgeable actress through her guide than I have in years! This book is a reminder of why I got into this business in the first place. Insprirational and the best helping hand I could have. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. ~ Actinggoddess, 5 Star Amazon Review

From the Author

"Actors by nature are renegades. We don't want to conform -- we want to act and that's all. We walk a fine line between inspiration and self-delusion. We courageously plumb the dangerous depths of psychological menace in a role, but mew like a stray cat over finding an agent. When I started, there were no classes on how to write a proper cover letter, take a meeting, or do-this and never-do-that at auditions. I've been a working actor for over 30 years, teaching these skills since 2000, and my resources are your guide to the New York, Los Angeles market, and beyond. I cannot promise you a career, but I can show you the path toward a career worth having."
~ Beverly Leech

Beverly Leech is one of the most influential teachers I have ever had. Not only did my knowledge grow but also my confidence.
She has always inspired her students with an intellect and drive that is infectious. I am thankful that she wrote a book so that the people who haven't had the chance to work with her, or alumni that miss having her guidance, will get that support through her book.
Teachers this good are a blessing to the struggling actor!

Actor Muscle is by far the best 'business of acting' book I have read (and I have read many). Beverly Leech's book is unique in that she approaches the how-to's from an actor's perspective. Other books like this merely gloss over the business of acting. Bev tells you what you need to do, the best ways to do it, and why you need to do it. She focuses on the actor's craft and technique as much as she does the business. She uses her own unique anecdotes to drive home each area that is covered. This is one of those books you won't want to put down. Bev gets the real, up-to-date, and relevant information out there that serious actors need to know. My book is full of highlights and notes to remember. It isn't just a how-to book, it is a guide on this beast of an industry and a companion to assist us on our journey. This book covers a wide variety of important topics in an easy-to-read, succinct, poignant, witty, and memorable fashion. If you are a serious actor in this industry, you would be a fool not to let Beverly Leech's Actor Muscle be your guide!

Wow I can not say enough amazing things about this book! I had Beverly as a teacher in the beginning of my acting career. During that time she guided me in many amazing ways as an artist. Equally important she guided me to see the business of the business. Something that a lot of actors unfortunately do not educate themselves on, thus making a huge amount of errors when starting out. I remember thinking during my training with Beverly, how lucky I was to have her guidance, and how other actors were missing out.
Now actors every where can rejoice. Now years later I can still turn to her indispensable wisdom when I need it in book form. I just had an executive producer at ABC call in a general meeting for me. My first general meeting with a top casting director. Luckily Beverly has a section on meetings, agents, managers. This chapter addresses the technical and personal aspect of meetings. I went into the meeting relaxed, confident, and excited. As Beverly would say "I went in and threw down". It was not just the work I felt confident about, but myself. The Casting Director just called me in this last week for two different roles!. Beverly deeply understands the soul of an artist and the brain of the business.
For any actor starting out, I suggest this book above all others. However I also suggest this book for any actor who has been hitting the pavement for a while. There is still new information, and amazing reminders for the soul of an artist. Hitting the pavement can seem daunting and overwhelming sometimes. Beverly's book gives a lot of wonderful directions, input, inspiration, and feedback. As an actor it has been very rewarding and time saving to learn about the business of the business. I look forward to referencing for years to come.

Attention All Actors!!! Working or Aspiring to jump start your career, do yourself the biggest favor and give yourself the gift of Beverly Leech's new book entitled " Actor Muscle: Craft, Grit, Whit ". As an actor myself I have bought and read numerous books that were supposed to give you the answer to all of those lurking questions we as actors have regarding craft and business. Friends I am here today to tell you that all those books pale in comparison to Ms. Leech book, there aren't any other books on the market today that give you more bang for your buck than "Actor Muscle". I believe there are books that we buy because they look interesting, and there are books that we buy to collect, but there is another kind of book that resides on our night stand for one simple reason because we never want it to far out of reach. I use this book when I am on set working, and I use this book when I am at home. Beverly has compiled 30 years of information, personal experience's and industry secrets for you, to help and guide you when your out looking for direction like I was. Beverly has left no stone unturned in this book she gives all it of to you. Audition help and preparation, to finding casting directors, agents and managers and the differences between the two, to industry professionals who are there to aide you in building your career in acting. There are numerous links to breakdown sites where you can post your resume' and so many other areas that you can utilize to move forward presenting your best possible self. "Actor Muscle" is BRILLIANT you won't be sorry you bought this book I know I'm not.

Best Regards,
Robert Barger Jr.- Actor
