4.0 out of 5 stars Haunting stuff....dark, January 20, 2006

This review is from: AD Police File 2 ~ The Ripper [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought this and the first volume at a video rental place that was liquidating much of their old VHS stock. I tossed the first volume of this because I hated how violent and sexually explicit it was. I kept this one because it wasn't so bad. Plus it has a decent story to boot, about this disturbing killer who's killing subway prostitutes. This time around instead of our good ol boy Leon (you remember him from Bubblegum Criss right), a detective girl named Iris follows the case with Leon playing a side character, providing backup.

Well without going terribly in depth into the story, its kind of funny how quickly Iris finds her first suspect and how quickly she gets sucked into the sad but sadistic story behind the murders. And I think what impressioned me the most was the question the whole episode raised "At one point does one stop becoming human and become machine?" Whereas in Bubblegum Crisis boomers were just these homicidal robots that could look like humans, AD Police's story seems to flesh them out just a little bit and make you scared at just how well cybernetics have infiltrated their way into this futuristic culture. It's cool but disturbing.

Needless to say, even though they tack this show as 'another Bubblegum Crisis story', that show was a little less violent in comparison to this. My video still has a sticker on it that says 'Must be 18 to rent' and that fits the bill. This isn't stuff for kids to be watching. Heck, this kind of stuff disturbs even me. And this particular episode will leave you with many vibrant chills as soon as its over. Plenty of blood and violent images and one Boomer getting really shot up.

So...you've been warned. Take check of yourself before you watch this.

On the upside, the end of the video features two music videos, which are really just scenes from the first two episodes set to different songs. 'Love Me Tonight' is an undescribably haunting song and if nothing else, it was worth buying this tape just to hear it.

Long live anime.

4.0 out of 5 stars When is a human not a human anymore?, August 30, 2000

The second of the series continues the tone of the first. This time the tale follows a young dispatcher for the ADP who decides to go out on her own to investigate a recent surge of subway killings. But the young woman finds more than she ever wanted to, and is forced to ask herself, when does a cyborg become more a machine than a human? When does a human stop being human? No clear answers are given, but the story raises questions any sci-fi geek can debate for weeks, and offers action enough for the rest of the planet. Sorry folks, this one's definately for the 18+ crowd. And remember: "Shoot the brain!"
