The ADATA AE400 is the fifth wireless hotspot device I have owned. The others are the D-Link DIR-505 and DIR-506L and the TP-Link TL-MR3020 and TL-MR3040. Like all of these, the AE400 can wirelessly share a USB storage device and can turn a wireless access point, such as at a hotel or coffee shop, into its own wireless hotspot with multiple clients (10 in the case of the AE400.) Like the D-Link DIR-506L and TP-Link TL-MR3040, the AE400 contains an internal rechargeable battery that can not only power the device independently but can also charge phones.

Unlike the D-Link and TP-Link devices, the ADATA AE400 did not begin life as a router and then have the other functions grafted on - while the AE400 does serve a router function, it can't be set up as a wireless repeater nor does it have an Ethernet jack to turn a wired connection into wireless. It also lacks nearly all of the multitudinous settings the typical router has - all you can configure is the SSID name and the wireless password. You don't even get a choice of encryption type - WPA2 is it (not that there's anything wrong with that.) If you need QOS settings, IP reservations, built-in firewall, etc., the ADATA doesn't have them.

Thanks to my friend who purchased this one for me as a b-day gift.

I thought it's a card reader in the begining.

After spent time on this, this device can connect w/external harddrive and SD card to do streaming and share music and video up to 5 people.

I also can carry this one with me on business trip to charge battery ( twice on my iPhone 5 ).

Thanks to ADATA for this creative product.

So far, I've used the Adata DashDrive AE800 as a HDD and to stream video and checked it out as a power bank.

I've been using it to upload stuff via WiFi from my laptop onto it with no problem. I tried it out with the USB too, and that works fine, but being able to use it wirelessly is one of the big plus points of this unit.

It's simple to set up, just switch it on and wait for your laptop to pick up the wifi signal and then log on. The devise will then appear as a 'network' on your PC, and you are good to go.

I've also downloaded the Android app so I can use it with my Nexus 7 tablet. One thing I wanted to use it for was to be able to stream video without having to store the video on my tablet. And that works great. The only downside is that you have to play the video through the app, and it seems it doesn't like a lot of formats. I usually use avi files and it doesn't like those. But it plays MP4's just fine.

Not yet tried it as a wifi hotspot, and to be honest, that is the least interesting part of this unit for me.

As for the look of this drive, it's very nice! It's black in colour, pretty sleek and a cool minimalist look to it.

All in all, very handy devise to carry with you. Great as an emergency power source to boost your phone or mp3 player for instance, and with it's large capacity, possible to have a load of movies on there that you can stream from your tablet via wifi.

All features work as intended. Although the battery does not last very long, even if it is not being used, it will drain within two days of charging.

Does everything it claims it can do on newer devices. my Motorola Xoom has difficulty streaming movies, but our Ipad works fine.

It is working like I had expected it. I recommend this product to people who wants a wireless harddisk, and still want to surf internet at the same time.

I felt it was genius accessory, based on what it offered and could do, but ultimately didn't like it on account how unintuitive on how it works. How you stream content isn't integrated and seamless so your media players and image viewrs have a hard time communicating with the device. The app for the device has it's own players and image viewers but they're just not that smart.

For phones without a SD card slot, its just not a good extra storage solution.

The battery charging feature was cool, but was a little on the lower power side when it came to amps so it makes charging flagship phones a little slower. The internet/wifi passthrough and sharing was very neat and an impressive solution to how the device communicates with your android device. There was alot of things I loved about the device, but how poor the experience on managing and streaming content just wasn't good enough, and while I alone understood the product and used it to the best of it's ability, its just not a very user-friendly device and I'd imagine it'd give alot of people a hard time who didn't know what this device was for. I'm very excited though to seem how or if ADATA chooses to troubleshoot and improve this type of product to the point it becomes a necessity.
