Don't buy. many other products that will do the same job.

I recommend this to anyone who would like to get a backup hard disk, without the worry of having their HD dropped and data lost.

I like this drive, but I really don't see that being lightly covered by a rubber case makes it Military-Spec.

I purchased this drive so I'd have something rugged and safe to store my pictures on that I could take with me. Something I could throw in my carry-on luggage and not worry about it getting banged around like you would with most hard drives. From that standpoint, it's been good. The thing has always been fine getting thrown in a bag and knocked around a bit.

That said, there is one MAJOR flaw in the design. The short USB3 cable can be unplugged from the drive, and it is very loose where it attaches to drive itself. Because of the direction of the cables tension, it puts stress on this connection and causes it to get looser and looser over time. After a few months I got to the point where now, any time I plug it in, a slight bump of the drive or the table it is resting on will cause it to wiggle loose enough to lose connection with the drive. Of course, this is akin to unplugging the drive from your computer with out properly ejecting it first, and puts your data at risk every time it happens (which is often).

In the end, you're left with a rugged drive that can take a beating, but can lose your data with the slightest bump or nudge to the surface it's resting on. It's not even usable on plane rides anymore (the primary purpose I purchased it for) because the vibration of the plane alone will shake the the cable loose of the drive, causing an improper ejection from the computer and sometimes corrupting the data.

The drive is fast, it's USB 3 and is considerably faster than the USB 2.0 drives I've used. It's a little more expensive than other 1TB drives but if it truly is military grade durability it will be well worth it if dropped. I have not dropped it... yet. The only fault I have so far with it, is it comes with a USB cable that is held in a grove wrapped around the drive. So far so good. This cable is very rigid and stiff. I find when I plug it in the stiffness prevents the drive from laying flat and puts stress on the drive connection sometimes causing a bad connection. You can play with the positioning and get it to work but I simply replaced the cable with a more flexible one. It's not quite as thick so it doesn't lock into the grove as well as the one that came with the drive though. So overall I'm very satisfied with the one minor issue with the cable.

The good:

1. The rubber portions will protect the drive from high G's when dropped.
2. Capacity is hight and size is ok (a bit wider than most 2.5 external drives, but that's due to the extra protection.
3. USB 3 cable provided is sturdy

The bad:

1. Extremely slow for USB 3, even slower than most other 5400 rpb 2.5 drives. Copying a 500 GB mix of files of all sizes (from 8GB to 4kb files, modelling daily usage) I got an average of 21 MB/sec write transfer rate. Most other drives in this category manage at least 33 MB/sec. The read performance is slow too at an average of 35MB/sec vs other drives that manage up to 60MB/sec. (In case you are wondering, all the maufacturer supplied numbers are absolute max performance numbers and don't reflect real usage). FYI the drive was formatted FAT32 originally but I had formatted it to NTFS before using it, and it was operating on USB3 on a Pro Gamer Machine.) I am having a hard time understanding why people would want to buy this product: it clearly is ruggedized for everyday usage, but people want fast transfers for everyday usage, and any other drive would serve just as well for backups that are normally stored safely and don't need to be ruggedized!

2. The rubber portions are only glued on in 3 or 4 spots on top of a very thin plastic casing underneath. very disappointed at the laziness in manufacturing.

3. The USB3 cable is quiet loose when connecting to the drive AND the PC. Tested with my laptop too, and the issue is with the cable and not my PC USB3 Ports.

I am *very* disappointed by this unit.
Both the picture as well as the description makes it sound like this is an Otterbox + Storage device.
But fact is, its just a plain HD, cloaked in the flimsiest of plastic covers, with an outright sham of thin rubber coating that is supposed to look like a sturdy "buffer zone", but in fact its just for optical appearance.
I know "military spec" when I see it, and this ain't it folks!

If you want a fast hard drive for travel, transport between different computer or shipping this is it! I own 4 other USB 3.0 portable hard drives and this ADATA drive has the fastest transfer speeds. I'm thrilled.

I needed a hard drive to ship back and forth with a business partner across the USA. I did my research and went with this ADATA drive. The feedback that I read was good, but not very in depth. I took a risk and am very happy that I did.

To date I have been an avid user and supporter of Western Digital hard drives. I own 4 WD Passport drives (2.5" USB-powered @ USB 3.0): two at 1 TB and two at 2 TB. I love WD for their reliable performance and transfer speed. However this 500 GB ADATA DashDrive outshines the WD drives for it's performance. I also own or have owned a handful of Seagate external hard drives (both 2.5" and 3.5") but have been less happy with this brand. Now onto the ADATA DashDrive review.....

FILE TRANSFER SPEEDS --> A +

It took about 1/3 less time to load files onto this drive 500 GB than on the 2 TB WD drives. I was transferring 350 GB of the exact same files between my PC and both portable hard drives, so I could compare them side-by-side. Some important things to consider. A 500 GB drive will transfer files in less time than a larger hard drive. Typically the larger the hard drive, the slower the file transfer. This applies to SD cards and flash drives as well. So I expected faster performance on this smaller ADATA drive, but was surprised by how much faster it was.

PROTECTION --> B+

This ADATA drive looks hard core, like it could withstand an earthquake. But on closer inspection, there are a few minor flaws. Nothing major, but worth pointing out.
